Caulfield is currently inundated with election posters, pamphlets, notice boards. All are full of promises about the Caulfield Racecourse. David Southwick appears to be winning the stakes (excuse pun!) in this area. Ms Abramson’s publicity machine is running a very long second we suggest. She definitely needs to pull the whip out and begin to concentrate on the local community.
We thought that those readers who may not have seen the latest Southwick effort might be interested in this poster that went up under his name and concerns the Caulfield Racecourse. We quote:
Fight inappropriate development at Caulfield Racecourse
The proposed Caulfield Racecourse development will mean:
- High density towering commercial buildings
- Traffic congestion
- Local lost amenities
- The threat of antisocial behaviour
The Brumby Labour government has done nothing to protect Caulfield residents from the proposed massive racecourse development which would see
- Twelve hundred residential units (including high rise towers)
- 20,000 square metres of office space
- 15,000 square metres of retail space
I want to work with you and the local community to ensure a better deal.
David Southwick
Liberal for Caulfield.

i saw that at the perrings house normanby rd! there was no contact number or website address on the poster? for a technology guru like david that was not an ommission, but an error of commission! i do not believe for one moment that david will go against his liberal mates on the racecourse trust, mrc executive, glen eira councillors, the ceo and his directors. after all glen eira council could have just voted down the amendment c60, which would have made things more difficult for mrc. instead they presented a piss weak case to the planning panel. can you imagine david going against money man, the movers and shakers? ahhh, also he is being supported by norman kennedy, the past glen eira mayor that got rid off the 1st glen eira ceo margaret douglas and installed andrew newton! i cannot see how david can change anything in glen eira and i cannot see if he is willing to do it either. it is all spin just to get mine and your vote.

According to Abramson, she has already delivered by improving the centre of the racecourse! But seriously, much of the area falls into the Oakleigh electorate where an unknown called Ann Barker has no clue about the racecourse let alone the struggle by residents to improve access to this vital community asset.

The decision on c60 is yet to eventuate after months and months. Two scenarios suggest themselves – (1) wait til the last council meeting when everyone is winding down for the holidays, or already on holidays, so the inevitable outcry won’t have the impact it should. This is typical council tactics. The other possibility is a let’s wait and see who wins the election. If labour, then it’s full steam ahead. If liberal, also full steam ahead since as forthright suggests, the cat’s already in the bag with all the liberal councillors. Is there anyone out there who would like to wager that the final recommendations will be to accept with a few insignificant cosmetic changes that is hoped to quiet the uproar? Can’t wait for the Lipshutz, tang, and magee version of events such as a ‘wonderful’ development, ‘appropriate’, or Pilling’s new phrase (aping Lipshutz) ‘right devvelopment for right place’. The really interesting bit will be to watch Forge and Penhalluriack.

hi anon, need to count all council votes. what about esakoff, hyams, and lobo? assuming that forge and penhalliurack vote the same way on the racecourse issue they only need 3 more to support them for the pendulum to swing the way people want! hey that would be a change! is it likely? not in my assessment. hyams will never go against lipshutz on important issue like the racecourse. and lobo is quite unpredictable swinging for or against depending on who he feels supports him. of course newton and burke support him all the time so you know how he will vote, for the mrc development as recommended by officers. now to esakoff the very practical and experienced councillor. she votes with majority full stop. i think forge and penhalliurack have their work cutout to convince the others to go against officers! who wins? money again, the movers and shakers, not the public. that is the glen eira way!
