Glen Eira City Council has been allocated $40,000 to undertake a stormwater flood mitigation study as a part of the Government’s Natural Disaster Mitigation Program.
“The Glen Eira study aims to accurately assess the level of flood risk across the municipality, identify priority flood protection works and incorporate land use and development overlay controls into Glen Eira City Council’s planning Scheme.
“Competition for these funds is fierce, and I congratulate the Council on its successful application,” Andrew Robb, Federal Member for Goldstein, said.

QUESTIONS:
1. Where is the report?
2. What were the outcomes/actions resulting from this report?
3. What if any changes were made to the Planning Scheme as a result of this study?
4. What has eventuated as a result of the other grant listed – ie. 2006: $50,000 for Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme – stormwater disaster risk management
5. $90,000 grants in the past 5 years for Storm Water mitigation/risk management – what has this council learnt that could have prevented the Feb 4th floods? – or is this simply a case of $90,000 down the drain?!!!!

Glen Eira Council need to act on these flooding issues with Melbourne Water to ensure it’s residents this will not happen again. It is unacceptable that some residents have been flooded in excess of 5 times in a thirty year period. Authorities can not say these drainage issues are a result of a 100 or 500 year year storm only. Be informed, our drains are becoming less able to cope with the amount of storm water due to the over development of our suburbs. Storm water drains overflowed into our house and they were laid in the 1930’s, it’s impossible for then to cope now. We have proof. We are so worried that this could happen again we obtained solutions from civil engineers and gave these to council. These have not been acknowledged by the Glen Eira Engineering department. We are now just a storm away from this happening again, council have solutions, when will they take notice, what if a child, elderly resident or pet home alone is caught up with a meter of water in their house and is injured? If any other flood affected Glen Eira residents are having similar problems with flooding issues be proactive and vocal. We can work together. Email us at info@murrumbeena.info

Secrecy and more secrecy. That’s the way this council operates in everything. What we (residents) don’t know can’t hurt them (administrators) so that if there are total balls ups then noone is any the wiser. Reports that never get into the public sphere, or reports that are held up for months and months until they can be doctored by the head honchos to say what they want them to say. None of this stuff should be top secret. Drains are basic, maintenance is basic. Publish the full figures and then we’ll see if enough is being done. and we will also be able to follow perhaps the trail of money and where it’s probably been diverted to.
