| GESAC will open to the community from 6am Monday 7 May 2012. The whole facility will be open. Details of programs and services are set out on the GESAC website www.gesac.com.au “The certificate of occupancy was issued on Monday 30 April and the builder handed over the facility to Council on Wednesday 2 May. Council’s GESAC staff are to be congratulated on opening the facility within a few days of taking control of the site,” Chairman of the Pools Steering Committee Cr Michael Lipshutz said. “For the first time, Glen Eira City Council will be offering all-year-round health and fitness facilities for the whole Community. GESAC will bring benefits to thousands of people for many years to come. Council would like to thank the Commonwealth and State Governments for their financial support for the project. Both Governments will be invited to take part in an official opening shortly,” Glen Eira Mayor Cr Jamie Hyams said. |

I see that the promise that fees would be “comparable” to other centres like the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre have proven false. Gesac is far more expensive.

I assume that David Feldman will officiate at the opening. he was the main proponent. Magee was a spectator.

Good news – the communication drought has finally ended and we will get a chance to see and use the facilitiy. Lets hope it lives up to my and Council’s expectations of social and financial success.
While I am happy to see GESAC finally opening I have to admit that that happiness is somewhat tainted by the appalling non-communicative stance Council took from December till now. The original delay announcement was last minute and since that delay Council adopted virtual silence when it came to informing residents and members about GESAC progress. The silence has made it difficult and expensive to juggle gym memberships and the kids swimming and sporting needs.
Full marks for finally opening but zero marks for communication. For me, I’m afraid the Council’s appalling handling of the communication will be long lasting – I used to believe the Council was “open, transparent and accountable” but not any more

So will Council also offically announce now that the oakleigh warriors have deserted the Oakleigh Recreation Centre and now make GESAC their home. The trading name may be ‘Glen Eira’ but they will always be Oakleigh in the eyes of Basketball Victoria.
