Booran Rd Reservoir,Duncan Mackinnon, Centenary Park. Big$$$$$$$$$$

Can’t buy this kind of interpretation. Every council has big projects. Booran Road won’t start for another couple of years apart from the design cost ($200k?). Duncan Mackinnon has been around for centuries and the rates keep going up 6.5% and Centenary Park is chicken feed compared to these two. So where on where is all the money going? If other councils can keep their rates lower than Glen Eira year upon year and most even spend more on capital works and other services then where’s my money going? Into staff I’d bet and other crap like huge wages for all the high flyers. And to top it off having a quick look at the budget we’ve still got 22 something million to pay off.

Try legal fees

Rates are still very cheap in Glen Eira.

Please stop. You are really making me laugh. I have no idea what you call “cheap”. Our rates have gone up 6.5% for at least the past three years and for one year it was 6%. That makes it over a 25% increase in a handful of years. Our property value has not gone up anywhere near 25%. And none of this takes into account how much charges have gone up. Things such as garbage, child care, permits and so on. There is no excuse for this continued rise and rise. There is cost shifting I will admit from state and federal governments to local governments but that doesn’t explain how other councils who have double the size of Glen Eira and thus more areas to service can manage to always keep their rate increases well below what we pay.
Glen Eira also has over 1000 new properties per year to add to the rate revenue unlike other councils. Something is drastically wrong and money is being wasted left, right and centre.
Someone mentioned legal fees. That’s one expense that was unnecessary and we don’t even know how much this amounts to. Having a very quick look at the budget now, charges are up again and what’s printed for Gesac will go up again in January. It’s criminal in my view when there’s nothing in the budget to suggest they have even tried to do some cost cutting. Staff naturally keep expanding as do their wages – well above the CPI.
