From council’s website:
“Cr Helen Whiteside submitted her resignation from the Glen Eira Council on Friday 30 July.
Helen served as a Councillor 2005 – 2010 (re-elected 2008), as Mayor in 2009 and Deputy Mayor in 2010. She served on the following Committees: Audit; Animal Management; Arts & Culture; Community Grants; Roads and was a Trustee of the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve Trust.
The Victorian Electoral Commission is responsible for the filling of the vacancy.
In the meantime, residents should deal with other Camden Ward or Glen Eira Councillors”.

Surely this can’t be a coincidence – Whiteside pulls the plug just when the disastrous Caulfield Racecourse Panel delivers its whitewash! Year after year we have heard her carp on about ‘inappropriate development’ – yet the results are there for all to see. All talk and no action I’m afraid – and that goes for the rest of the councillors as well. This report has opened up a pandora’s box that will engulf all of Glen Eira. That is Whiteside’s legacy!

what a turn of events? peter blight received more votes than whiteside! is he ready to serve? it would make for a much more interesting council and may be residents would be have a better voice.

What you are seeing is a decent hard working Councillor who is jumping ship before this bunch are sacked.

The text talks about Helen submitting her resignation. Instead of speculating on rediculous reasons such as the Race course why not look at the obvious and try to get hold of the resignation letter.

all councillors are working very hard. but to what effect? are they representing residents and community views or just prosecuting their own views and ambitions? and if they cannot sort out their differences to benefit community their represent then indeed they should not be there. david feldman could not continue. now helen whiteside. who is next? as to sacking, it did nothing for democracy in glen eira last time and it will do nothing for glen eira if it is to happen again. god forbid a commissioner and andrew newton running this council for another 3 years. but the next 2 years with andrew newton will also be a challenge. what a mess, what a disaster of a compromise the legal eagles on the council have cooked up. yuk

I note from today’s council agenda that Cr Whiteside submitted a 3-page resignation letter – and council will consider whether to release it, with or without deletions. Should be inetresting.

From today’s Caulfield Leader (front page)
Deputy mayor quits Other councillors’ behaviour blasted
DEPUTY Mayor Helen Whiteside has quit because of an ‘‘intolerable situation’’ at Glen Eira Council.
And Cr Jim Magee has revealed he has thought about resigning too.
Mrs Whiteside said the continuing investigation by the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate, the reappointment of chief executive Andrew Newton and some councillors’ ‘‘unacceptable behaviour’’ helped her decision to quit on July 30. The Camden Ward councillor and former mayor said she wanted to see out the term but ‘‘it’s too hard to continue under these circumstances’’.
‘‘I’m not a quitter but there has been some behaviour that I find unacceptable among the councillors,’’ Mrs Whiteside said. ‘‘I can’t be party to it.’’
Cr Magee, who had considered quitting, said: ‘‘ All councillors should comply with the municipal inspector’s requests’’. He wouldn’t say why he considered resigning.
Chief municipal inspector David Wolf confirmed the investigation for potential breaches of the Local Government Act in April.
Mrs Whiteside said she could not comment further during the investigation, but there had been decisions made ‘‘leading to bad governance’’. Mayor Steven Tang said Mrs Whiteside’s comments were ‘‘unfair’’.
‘‘ I’m confident the remaining councillors will work in a united way,’’ Cr Tang said.
The Victorian Electoral Commission will do a countback of votes from the 2008 election to find Mrs Whiteside’s replacement.
The beleaguered council was sacked in 2005 for chronic infighting, misuse of resources, harassment and bad governance.
