Submissions to the VEAC inquiry into public open space in metropolitan Melbourne have now closed. We look forward to reading the many submissions that individuals and councils have submitted. What should be particularly fascinating is the response from Glen Eira Council. Given that this item only came up at the final council meeting of the year (and the call went out in October), we can only speculate as to the kind of submission that will go in. Of greater interest to residents are the processes that went into any final submissions. Given that the Christmas break has occurred, as well as the holiday period, and the fact that there are no council meetings scheduled until February, we wonder if:
- Councillors had any say in the writing of the submission?
- Were they ‘consulted’ in any shape or form?
- Did they get to see the final version prior to its being submitted?
- Did they care – or simply abrogated their responsibilities to the administration?
If all of the above questions are answered in the negative, then it once again demonstrates how councillors (either willingly or unwillingly) are excluded from partaking in any truly democratic and representative process. The voices of our councillors will once more have been neatly silenced and side-stepped, even though we assume that the actual submission will have been drafted in their name – ie. Glen Eira City Council!

I’m sick to death of this council bitching and moaning that it has the least amount of open space in the world. Then in the same breath Newton tries to sell off every little bit of land he can such as Packer Park recently. If he really cared then the submission to veac would have been on council’s agenda months ago. I blame councillors for all of this. They’re supposed to be in charge. well bloody hell start acting like your in charge and don’t come up with all those crocodile tears about lack of open space. Do your jobs and plan properly and stop selling off our future to the MRC and other developers!

Council will just re-hash the last version sent…and why not? Despite the Caulfield racecourse issue having the most number of submissions received, it was not even mentioned in the EM by VEAC. Caulfield Racecourse is a protected species by both the State Government and Council for many years – it’s amazing what a few tickets to the races can buy.

Believe it or not some of us support the MRC and the way they utilise the Racecourse.Hundreds of our constituents work directly for and around the Racecourse and many of us belong to the MRC and attend races. Horse racing is a large and important industry in Victoria and Caulfield is a vital part of Racing. This is all about ‘Not In My Backyard.’ If you don’t like the Racecourse in your area then move.
