…due to health reasons that the Glen Eira Administration and Audit Committee ignored. Now can we all move on and sack Newton, Gibbs and McLean now before they put more people’s lives at risk.

Amazing how quickly this sign can go up, but to put up proper warnings as recommended takes months. Well done Newton. Keep it up, that’s the best way to get sacked.

oh an alternative is for him to go on an extended sick leave until his retirement in 2012. i imagine he has plenty of accumulated sick leave and holiday. if he would have any common sense he would have negotiated by now a retirement package and went for a well deserving holiday.

He could claim bacterial infection from the mulch heap since he put it there, left it there for two years, and conned the Audit Committee and Lipshutz.
What sour grapes in spades. But it’s typical Newton. Deflect the blame onto everyone else except him and don’t reveal the real reasons behind it. Oh, and for free service – what a cheek. Nothing but nothing is free in Glen Eira. We pay through the nose for everything. Wait til the next budget rate rise is revealed and then scream blue murder.

The photo tells us many things about the character of the man with the job of managing (not running) this council. My interpretation is that he is an incredibly sore loser and will stoop to the lowest depths in order to avoid any blame that might befall him. Instead of supporting a council decision, Newton reveals what can only be seen as a real nasty streak in his character. Pass the buck – it’s them, not me. This however does not get him off the hook. No adequate warnings at the site and an Audit committee that did nothing. When 7 councillors decide that the mulch was firstly put in the wrong place and does represent some danger, no matter how miniscule, it is Newton’s job to support councillors, not to give them this backhander. It’s definitely backfired and just shows the community the kind of management practices that should be denounced.

I was taking a walk along a shared path yesterday when a kid of about 14 went sailing past on her bike. The next minute I heard an almighty crash. The girl had fallen off her bike and lay sprawled on the concrete. She had torn her jeans and had bloody, grazed hands and elbows. Luckily no breaks. The only reason this happened was that there was a huge 3 to 4 inch drop from the edge of the path to the ground level alongside the raised concrete. Adding to this was the pile of mulch that had been swept or bedded down over time that made the drop even bigger. What is council’s risk management doing about this kind of potential calamity? The child could have been seriously injured. The crazy insistence on laying paths that are 6 inches of concrete is poor engineering. All along this pathway there are drops of anything from 3 to 6 inches. A disaster waiting to happen. What’s even worse is that mulch is now spread all over the path, making it an even greater risk. Instead of spending hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars on concrete, it would have been heaps better if sound engineering had been designed to ensure that everything was level and that we didn’t get a path that was at 45 degrees angle from the surrounding ground area. But I guess that would take a few brains and a real awareness of what risk management means. All that Newton seems to care about is that things look good – not that they’re efficient, cost effective and above all safe. I told the child to tell her parents to sue!

An article in the November, 2009 Public Notices section of the Glen Eira Council website says that at the 24 November, 2009 Ordinary Council meeting a resolution was to put to re-appoint Mr. Andrew Newton as Chief Executive Officer for a term of two years, with an option exercisable by Council to extend the re-appointment for a further two years after that.
When is Council going to send a formal notice to Newton that his contract will not be extended. Clearly, the behaviour that caused that sign to be placed is unacceptable and Council should act accordingly.

Pay him out the 6 months and get someone decent in – and get some different competent members of the Audit Committee while Council are at it.

The sign is 100% accurate so what is your problem?
