From Council’s website –
Glen Eira City Council is currently finalising a proposed play space project at Murrumbeena Park on Kangaroo Road.
The proposal sees the removal of the existing playground adjacent to the main sports oval and the creation of a new play space in the eastern side of the park. The design incorporates a number of leading edge components and treatments which will make the playspace a model for future developments.
The design goes beyond any existing playground and merges traditional play equipment with interactive landscaping, family picnic areas, tree plantings and facilities. It provides areas from toddlers to more active adolescents and can be accessed by wheelchairs and prams.
In January, the Victorian Government announced a grant of $258,921 to assist in the construction of the Murrumbeena play space as part of Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Community Facility Funding Program.
The project is listed as an item for consideration as part of Council’s 2012–13 Budget.
An opportunity to view the plans will be available at Murrumbeena Park Pavilion, Kangaroo Road on Thursday 24 May from 6.30pm to7.30pm. This will include a brief presentation by the play space designer and Council officers will be available to clarify any issues and answer any questions.

COMMENTS
- What has happened to ‘community consultation’ re the design? One hour will definitely give residents ample opportunity to view and comment on the design, won’t it? Could it possibly be that after the fiasco of Packer Park the decision was NOT TO ENGAGE with the community and seek feedback?
- No mention of the $700,000 that will come of ratepayers’ pockets!
- Why are all designs produced by this council so ‘cartoonish’ and lacking in detail?
- Risk management would certainly be an issue with this design given that the goal posts sit practically on the edge of the path/play areas. Will this mean that kiddies have to dodge footballs, soccer balls, etc? Or will council suddenly decide that they have to ‘relocate’ the sporting grounds at the cost of mega bucks? Or will we now have a 20 foot wire mesh fence to cordon off the sporting oval from the ‘development’?
- Why are we spending $1,000,000 when this council has been classified as ‘high risk’ and we are facing a ‘cash crisis’ and a playground is already in existence at the park?

Design is a matter of individual taste so I won’t comment on the images. I do however resent what is the lack of consultation opportunities provided to ratepayers again. 1hr when people are just returning home from work or putting children to bed is not enough time, nor is it the ideal time.
One million dollars does not fall under the category of “minor developments”‘ either and thus should be subject to full consultation as occured with the Packer Park scheme – although admittedly the countless comments provided by residents were largely ignored!
The other point that’s worth raising is all of these plans are being put forward before there is the new Open Space Strategy. I would have liked to see this in place first and then design carried out on the basis of proper planning. This sounds like another isolated and pet project without necessary integration and consultation.

There’s supposed to be a master plan going back to 2002 for this park. Would be interesting to compare that plan with what’s been proposed here because the argument that is always put up is that we’ve got a master plan so can’t deviate – unless it suits us of course. We should be very happy anyway since it’s only taken 10 years to get this off the ground and will take another 10 years for it to be finished because they haven’t got the money to spend on this. When the budget comes out I recommend that people look for some very creative accounting in the next couple of years and try and figure out where the booty is being hidden and what it’s really being spent on. Probably more car parks.

“wide footpaths and open style fencing provide a safer more vibrant neighborhood”. Caulfield village website.
One year after C60 was approved with conditions, it is worthwhile asking what has been achieved. Well the MRC has had it’s outrageous development plans approved, and tenderers have been shortlisted for the development. Residents, well they have been shafted yet again. No open style fencing replacement to make the area safer as promised, no park as promised, no centre redevelopment as promised, no opening up of the racecourse as promised, no vibrant neighborhood as promised, Council has even closed the wide footpath on Queens Avenue. Lipshutz, Pilling, Esakoff and Hyams should hang their heads in shame over this. Southwick should just do the honorable thing and just leave the area and resign. Meanwhile the MRC are laughing all the way to the bank. To paraphrase Kerry Packer, you only get one Andrew Newton in your lifetime and they have had theirs.

Just as well we have two prominant lawyers on Council. Bahahahaha!! Slater and Gordon should just launch a claim against both the MRC and Glen Eira Council for residents for breach of agreement and watch Lipshutz and Hyams run.

when we say ‘agreement’ is it like a handshake or legally binding? Also is part of the agreement to get the stables on Neerim and Queens Avenue? Is this not crown land anyway?

Aint it amazing the govt. announces the grant and licktey split Council comes up with $700K for a playground that is not in need of replacing. Yet when residents ask for traffic calming treatments in unsafe congested streets their is they get told Council only budgets for 4 traffic treatments per year (how much is a speed cushion?).

In this case it appears that the designer has catered for children from toddlers to teens – not so in the GESAC playground relocation. They have taken a playground catering to children of all ages and turned it into a toddlers only playground. At a cost of $400K this is not a good outcome.

Wow! Looks amazing, kids will love it.
If residents don’t want it can I suggest we have it in Centenary Park ( near me!!)

yes on the bright side Murrumbeena has the best parks in GE with this and Packer and Duncan Mckinnon. Looks like a great place to live if you have kids.
Compare this to the area south of Bambra Road to Kooyong. It is a desert !
