We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
PS: We’ve inadvertently left out the conclusion to the above post. Consequently we copy the rest of Mr Gatoff’s webpage here –
If you have indicated whom you would preference, could you please explain why you chose those particular candidates?
I’m standing to win not to put someone else through but by preferencing Oscar Lobo, I hope to get a seat in the Council chamber.
Are you affiliated with any political party or organisation and has that party or organisation contributed in any way to your election campaign?
I am not a member of a political party nor am I aware of any organization contributing to my campaign.
Councillors often promise the world, but deliver very little. How do you intend to adhere to you election promises?
By working collaboratively with colleagues a Councillor can achieve better outcomes. I would serve the community with a refreshing honesty and openness absent at present.

Congratulations go to Newton Gatoff for having the courage to voice what most people already know – Glen Eira Council does not serve its people. Congratulations also to GERA for framing the questions and seeking answers. When councillors are prepared to shun the spin and to join with residents in a collaborative and honest relationship, that’s when things will improve. I for one will be supporting Gatoff to the hilt.
There’s much to like here and much which will surely appeal to people who have been clamouring for such changes for many years. Structure plans, worked out in close and full consultation with residents is a must. So are height controls and transparency. This council under the current administration has ignored residents, spent money wastefully, and not been accountable to any degree. The outcry for change and the realisation that many things are awry in Glen Eira are enough, I hope, to elect like-minded individuals who hold Mr Gatoff’s views.
Mr. Gatoff is not quite understanding how Council works. The Councillors employ a CEO. That is where it stops. The CEO decides on the structure of the Council from that point. To engage a CEO and make his emloyment conditional on a struicture that suited the Councillors would be probably unlawful. The delegations are pretty straight forward and once again the CEO arranges these and councillors normally accept what is recommended. Most candidates have a false impression of how the town hall works and this is not always their fault.
We beg to differ on your interpretation anonymous. Councillors via their resolutions decide on strategic planning, budgets and all other important policy decisions via their resolutions. They also have the power to adopt, amend any delegations that come before them. We reiterate what we have already said countless times. Officers are SERVANTS; councillors make, shape and should direct all policy. That is what the LGA states.
Anon 4 – Me thinks it is you who does not understand how Council works.
Yes, the Councillors appoint the CEO – unequicably the CEO reports to Council. The CEO is responsible for running the daily operations of Council in accordance with the delegations of authority defined by Councillors. The fact that these Councillors have failed residents by “normally accepting what is recommended” (which in Glen Eira’s case involves delegating just about everything to the CEO) – does not stop them from questioning or changing the delegations, nor as you imply is it unlawful to do so.
This guy is the one with the understanding of how Councils should work, your take is on how this Council works and the current councillors unquestioning acceptance of the administration’s line or interpretation. Councillor’s would do well to remember that they can delegate the authority to act but they cannot delegate the responsibility to monitor the administration and ensure that the administration adheres to residents goals and aspirations. This is something that all of them and in particular the gang have forgotten.
Anon, you are confusing how this council works with how this council should work. You think just because this council works this way that is the way it is supposed to work. Got news for you Anon, you are wrong!!!! Should and is are poles apart in Glen Eira. Time to go back to the should.
,We agree with anonymous 4 – Mr. Gatoff does not have a clue on how a
Council works. He thinks by making statements about the performance of
Councillors he can secure a place in the “chambers”. There are many other
venues that Councillors and the Executive discharge their responsibilities
i.e. Assemblies, being on various committees, planning conferences etc. He
has found a playmate at Gleneira blog which is well known to be 100%
negative like him. Gatoff has been telling the residents (as he has said in
this blog) that all Councillor are good for nothing. He does not realise that
people have already made up their minds (MODERATORS: rest of sentence deleted) Gatoff grow up with your children and try and stand for elections
in 2016 when you may be ready to be a Councillors. But remember by bad
mouthing the Councillors and the Officers it will back fire you and if by chance you are elected, the officers and Councillors will make your life miserable.
Your comments sure don’t do you any credit. They just show how stupid and moronic you really are. Gatoff posted this on his facebook – it’s got nothing to do with Glen Eira Debates. If you’ve made up your mind already then it also shows what an idiot you are if you think that this council is hunky-dorey. Slag all you want but people are sick to death of what’s been going on under Newton and his followers. Get a life and start looking reality in the face. Change is coming so get used to it or start crying to your mates in the administration offices. They’ll need all the help they can get. I’m betting they won’t last a year with a new council in.
So Sam & Juliet have decided that stating what you see needs improving in Glen Eira and how you would go about improving it, constitutes “bad mouthing”. Amazing!!!!
What’s even more amazing is that Sam & Juliet, after a genuine piece of unsubstantiated “bad mouthing”, also state that “if by chance you are elected, the officers and Councillors will make your life miserable”. Such a “promise” indicates that this is considered acceptable behaviour in Glen Eira and quite succinctly points to all that is wrong in Glen Eira.
You are spot on anonymous 4 – Newton (MODERATORS: sentences deleted) He has now found a friend in Glen Eira post as both of them are negative minded people. Gatoff grow up and then stand for elections.
One assumes all other people standing for Council will have their PR output posted here too. We wouldn’t want to be accused of being partisan, would we? 😉
All Pr’s that we’ve found have been highlighted on the blog. We’ve either directly listed, or through residents and candidates comments, listed Kate Dempsey’s, Mary Delahunty, Brett Hedger, and even put up the Hyams’ flyer. All candidates are free to contact us with their flyers, websites, spiels as they see fit. Residents are also free to judge the veracity of what each candidate says and also to judge incumbents on their records. We make no secret of the fact that we are advocating for CHANGE – as 4 of our posts have indicated via their headings. That does not mean that we are endorsing any single candidate or incumbent.
I’m for change too. However the unfortunate reality is the overwhelming majority of residents don’t take anything like the interest we do. I’d go so far as to say they couldn’t care less. Apathy reigns supreme.
Regrettably, 6 of the incumbents will get back. Sad but true.
Only 70% of people vote. In Camden that means a little over 11,000. Lipshutz got about 30% of these last time. All you need to unseat him is a slight swing going to the newbies and with his past history on C60, racecourse, gesac, audit committee and plenty more, there will be a huge dint in his vote. It’s going to be a very very interesting election and he shouldn’t be so cock sure. Stranger things have happened.
But you are right that Lipshutz got about 30% of the vote – Penhalluriack got 34%. Both well over the 25% needed to get elected.
I think Autonomy is correct. Despite the efforts of this blog, most voters won’t have a clue about the candidates they are voting for. It is likely that most of the sitting councillors will be re-elected – including Hyams, Magee, Esakoff, Pilling, Penhalluriack, Lipshutz.
But the important issue is the other three. If we can get 2 or 3 new progressive councillors elected, it could change the complexion of council.
I’d suggest that anyone who cares about local politics offers their support to one of the new candidates. I don’t know much about the Rosstown candidates (other than that Don Dunstan presents himself as a resident activist but gave his presences to Esakoff in the last election) – but Gatoff in Tucker and Delahunty and Dempsey in Camden seem worthy of conideration.
I’m not so sure about Hyams and Magee in Tucker. Both had to rely on preferences to get in last election. Hyams’ stocks would certainly have plummeted with his support and casting vote for many unpopular causes over the past couple of years. Tucker is also the one ward that is feeling first hand the results of overdevelopment and traffic chaos. Lobo of course is nothing more than an appendage. The difficulty for voters will be to sort out who are the dummy candidates.
Glen Huntly is close to the mark in his post. The 6 incumbents he mentioned will be re-elected in my view.
After that it’s interesting. I can’t have the perennial candidate Dunstan for a whole range of reasons including his preference deal with Esakoff. My feeling in Rosstown is Esakoff and Pillling will be returned with the remaining spot going to either Mikelsons because of the organised support or Okotel who is running a very well thought through campaign.
Similarly in Camden, Lipshutz and Penhalluriack will be re-elected for differing reasons. There four or five in the hunt for the other spot with the Jewish vote being central to the outcome.
In Tucker, the incumbents Magee and Hyams will get back again on the devil you know (or couldn’t care less vote). The final spot here will be a fight to the wire amongst a number and dependent on the preference deals.
I am somewhat sickened to see the slanging that is going on here. Suddenly anyone who presents an alternate view to the Council view is harrassed and slurred. Elections must be nigh and the encumbents must be rattled. Harrasment and sluring is not presenting a constructive alternate view.
Just think folks, Federal and State Governments have a sitting opposition and media scrutiny that highlights issues and raises public awareness. Local Government does not. Councillors get elected for 4 years and away they go, No one (except this blog, the newly awakened Glen Eira Residents Association or council election candidates), questions them or asks what happened to their election promises. Yet when you think about it they have more impact on our daily lives than anyone realises. Think beyond garbage collection, they make significant decisions which impact our lives and our personal assets eg. what gets built next to us, traffic and parking issues, availability of open space, what is worthy of protection and what is not, the level of community services to be provided, how much info they will give us and how they spin it, and how much they will charge us (and we have to pay regardless).
Personally, I think this blog and the newly awakedned Glen Eira Residents group does a pretty decent job of objectively outlining issues and presenting Council shortcomings and an alternative which I can assess. If I didn’t think this, I’d stop reading them.
That this Council is deficient in addressing the long standing major issues clearly expressed by residents. in the Community Plan and the State Govt Satisfaction Survey, is blatantly evident (i.e.planning, traffic, open space, accountability and so much more), regardless of the hype Council puts on the minor issues (i.e. it’s ability to answer residents phone calls in nano seconds).
By all means present a reasoned, critical alternate view on this website and the candidate concerned. I’d be interested in that, but unsubstantiated slurring doesn’t interest me nor the other thousands that are reading this website, other websites and facebook pages
When you don’t like what your hearing then just kill the messenger instead of thinking about what he’s saying. That way you don’t have to defend yourself or justify the policies that lots of people are now seeing has no legs. Chuck some dirt and hope it sticks. Well this time that won’t work. Too many folks have had enough of the bullshit and the spin. When they can’t get out of their drives because of traffic and have monsters going up next door to them or in their street they sure know the direction that this council has been heading down for years and they don’t want it. When someone offers an alternative he should be latched onto and his explanations listened to carefully. We don’t want more of the same.
My letter box is starting to fill up with the biggest load of drivel from all the wannabes and sitting councillors, depite my No Junk Mail sign. Reading some of these is depressing. Lobo wants to be my friend, Hyams stands on his pathetic record of being community minded and who I guess is the latest stooge Phil De’Ath just wants things to stay the same. Gatoff at least puts up some concrete suggestions.
Colin – Just observed from previous posts that you seem to be a regular person patronising this blog. Perhaps you are unemployed or you have lots of time on hand. Gatoff sent his answers to the questions asked by GERA who work closely with the author of this blog and thus it appeared.. You are a bigger idiot with lots of ego. One moron recognises the other morons and that is all that you do.
