The only good candidate that can be seen in the picture is Mary Delahunty.
Who is that joker in green tie and of course Don Dunstand? God save the Council if they creep in. Apparently, they were in the council before and contributed nothing;just warmed the chairs. They are looking for title and something to earn now that they have retired. Newton is promising the world, can he deliver? Karina and Phil may be a breath of fresh air as they are both smart and well qualified. Will they be good Councillors, time will tell.

Written and authorised by an idiot.

My neighbour tells me Newton Gatoff knows more about Council than the others in the running. He works for another Council and understands planning and governance better than any of the lot currently in. From what I’ve read on his facebook page, he’s just promising common sense which gets my vote and from everyone else in East Bentleigh I imagine. Judging by Phils leaflet, he’s a Liberal and sorry but not the place for party politics, weve enough of that already. Not sure who Mary is apart from her familiar name or what qualifies her, but I agree she looks engaged listening to the two old soldiers at the front!
I’m a first time reader and am amazed at how much info there is on this site – keep it up guys, we need this sort of info to bring Glen Eira into the 21st Century!

FYI. Mary is an ALP member. Mr. Gattof has the orange on his posters that is characteristic of the ALP. They use this colour during council elections. His preferences indicate he is supported by the ALP. He Magee and Lobo are ALP.

According to the dictionary Shrek is the Jewish word for fright .That is a great description for Dunstan. (MODERATORS: rest of comment deleted)

anywhere we can see donations to candiates. Be interested to see how all these posters are being paid for and which ‘community’ they are representing.

Gotta disagree with Shrek & Fiona, there’s three good, genuine candidates in the phone who are standing with well thought out policies and will bring in much needed change – Newton Gatoff, Kate Dempsey and Don Dunstan. Everyone else in the photo is either a stooge supporting the status quo or extremely light weight, (i.e. knows very little but are promising everything as they embark on the first stage of their political career), (MODERATORS: sentence deleted)

Well, I’d certainly put most of those candidates before any of the sitting councillors.
Gatoff seems to have some interesting ideas although I’m a bit concerned about who he seems to be associating himself with via preferences.
I’m not especially concerned about Mary Delahunty’s ALP membership. She hasn’t tried to hide her political affiliation like some candidates have and she would certainly provide a contrast to the Liberal-leaning gang.
Kate Dempsey seems to have good intentions but hasn’t been very clear about what she would actually do – other than improve consultation. And her website states “While I believe the Council is generally doing a good job in Glen Eira, I do feel decision making, consultation and involvement could improve . . . .”. Which suggests she doesn’t think there’s really a lot wrong with council.
As for Don, well at least he would provide us with some light entertainment on council.

Where’d Pilling slink off to? Gone dead quiet. Better to lie low than confront all those people pissed off with racecourse and pro gang alliances.
October 16, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Wonder whether Newton wrote to the MRC querying why they are not adhering to the racecourse agreement signed by Pilling, Esakoff, Hyams and Lipshutz? At least that is the process discussed after the question was raised by a ratepayer at the last meeting. Unfortunately the minutes don’t reflect the response provided by Hyams and Penhalluriack. Time for the Ombudsman to pay Council a visit.
October 16, 2012 at 6:25 PM
I too checked Dempsey’s website after I saw Lipshutz gave her 3 on the ticket. Is she another of the gang?
October 16, 2012 at 6:47 PM
Dempsey has declared herself as a total Independent and I believe her. She is not a member of any political party as Delahunty probably is. If Lipshutz has given his third preference to Dempsey then I would think that he prefers an independent to a closet Labor person.
October 16, 2012 at 7:39 PM
Don’t think there is much of a closet. I picked up Delahuntly’s preference card yesterday and see there is an endorsement from Danby.
October 16, 2012 at 8:40 PM
Only partly correct D Evans.
The fact that he prefers Dempsey over Penhalluriack, Forge, Delahunty or Sounness (who are the only other genuine alternative candidates in Camden) suggests that he thinks she will be much easier to work with. She’s much less likely to challenge the status quo.
Sadly, it would appear Dempsey has done a deal with Lipshutz. I don’t know who she’s preferenced but I’d guess that in return she’s probably preferenced Lipshutz and his running mate Kuran over Penhalluriack and Forge – to make sure Forge doesn’t get the third position. If so, it doesn’t give me much hope that Dempsey will be an agent for change on council.
But Delahunty is no closet Labor – she’s been quite open about her membership. And it’s much more likely she’ll stand up to the likes of Lipshutz and Hyams.

I see that people have been busy speculating on my independence and my capability. Let me speak firstly to my independence and say that I have not done any preference deals with any other candidate. I am truly independent and I stand alone. I do not have a running mate or dummy candidate feeding me preferences as everyone else in Camden Ward has (except Thomas from the Greens).
I will put my HTV card on my FB page tonight. There you will see that I have put myself, the Greens and Mary Delahunty at the top (in the hope of some change) and then the incumbents and finally the apparently dummy candidates at the bottom of my list. I have done this because I find it really frustrating that a democratic election can be run this way, with stooge candidates feeding preferences to other candidates. I do not think it is right and while it may mean I cannot get elected, at least I feel some integrity in the way I have conducted my campaign.
I cannot guess why other candidates have put me where they have on their how to vote cards. For example, I have put Mary Delahunty 3rd and yet she has put me 5th.
As for my experience, can I say respectfully that I am the most experienced candidate – more so than Newton Gatof, who at least works for a council. Which other candidate has a close working knowledge of more than 10 local authorities in Melbourne? Which candidate has successfully undertaken around 20 projects within local authorities, ranging from social and economic impact statements, social policy, strategic planning, community consultation and executive coaching? Which of the candidates has coached senior council staff? Which of the candidates has been on 15 NFP Boards over the past 20 years? Which candidate has offered professional advice, support and training in local governance to councils? Which candidate has published documents on the management of local authorities, co-authored published work on gender in local government with the CEO of Monash Council? Which candidate is asked regularly to speak at national and international conferences on her expertise in local government management and leadership? Finally which candidate – aside from me – has a PhD completed over 3 years, which is a close study of 25 CEOs in Melbourne local authorities? Of course none is the answer! There is simply no comparison with my depth of experience.
As for the likelihood of Mary Delahunty “standing up” to the incumbent councillors, it might sound appealing to say that ‘Glenhuntly’, but is not the way things work in a council, the majority rules and team work must prevail. With respect, again I have considerably more experience than Mary at working in teams, on boards, with councils as I have been in the business for more than 25 years (can she say the same?) and I understand fully the complexity of the role I am taking on.
October 17, 2012 at 9:33 PM
Kate, just checked your how-to-vote card. My apologies for my previous assumptions. That is a very principled card.
But it still concerns me that Lipshutz prefers to have you on council than any of the other candidates.
And if you are elected I do hope you will “stand up” to arrogance and bullying. Being on council is not the same as being on a board. It is important to represent your community as you see it, even if you are in the minority.
October 18, 2012 at 8:05 AM
Glen Huntly, someone said to me the other day, that after your first two or three preferences, you go with the “least worst” option. Since I am independent, I guess I fall into that category for some other candidates. I am hoping, should I get in, that I can work with all councillors, to make the best decisions. After all, this is what I teach at uni and what I train councils and boards to do, for a living. I may be forced to practice what I preach (gulp!). If I can’t and that is not known yet, then of course, I will do my best to stand up for what I believe the community wants. I must correct something I said yesterday though: to be fair to Frank Penhalluriack, he has been totally open that Cheryl Forge is his running mate and I don’t think there is anything amiss in that pairing (as I may have inadvertently suggested).
