Oh great another incumbent Councillor seeking re-election and claiming a track record in open space – what bullsh*t. I draw residents attention to the much heralded $30,000 grant Southwick got from the State Government to assist Glen Eira re-develop it’s open space plan/policy which has been left to languish since 1998. Quite clearly, despite years of residents very vocally, raising this as a top concern, the ball has been well and truly dropped and dropped.
Don’t be fooled the lame claims of development of the centre of the racecourse (it’s been a public park for 150 years and is only now being developed because of C60 approval), Booran Road Reservoir (consultation commenced in 2008, the 2012 consultation showed nothing had advanced since 2008 and nothing will advance until 2016/17), the Murrumbeena Playspace wasn’t on the priority list until a govt. grant came along and now it’s top of the heap. Not one of these initiatives involves increasing available open space – with the exception of the highly questionable Murrumbeena Playspace being greenlighted, these have been ignored for years and years.

There was a post up here some months back that I was eventually able to find. It was quoting what Hyams, Esakoff and some others had said to the leader in 2008 prior to the last election. We’re living in a time warp because the glib lines from then to now are practically identical. The upshot for me is that after these promises of 4 years ago we’re hearing the same. If they can’t deliver on one single thing in four years then they’re not going to be any different now. FYI here’s what they allegedly said back in 08
I will work for low rates and a high pensioner rebate, improved community and sporting facilities, better support for sporting and other clubs, improved services for families and the aged, better community consultation, improved safety and better representation to State Government. I will strongly oppose over-development – Hyams words
Making Glen Eira even more liveable by keeping rates low, retaining the pensioner rebate, improving services, facilities, safety, shopping strips and open space, whilst protecting our environment and residential amenity – Esakoff

It’s very disappointing but also telling that many of the slogans employed by both Esakoff and Hyams literally parrot each other. There’s no rule about verbatim repetition, yet it would be good to know that some candidates do have original ideas and aren’t mirror images of each other. In the context of many Council decisions though, it’s plain as the nose on anyone’s face that the views of the gang are replicated time and time again. These flyers simply prove how indivisible and bereft of ideas they all are.

Every new candidate isn’t having any trouble in following the rules judging by the voting cards I’ve seen. The only ones who don’t follow the rules are Lipshutz, Esakoff and Hyams. They must think they’re a law unto themselves.

I got my vote out of the way today. Took a litle time to observe the goings on at the Town Hall. It’s no more than an observation but the majority were taking the poll literature of Esakoff and Lipshutz. Sadly folks, it appears the gang will be together again.

Maybe! Don’t forget people are generally polite and take everything put under their nose when they are set upon by a horde of people giving out htv cards. It’s easier to say “thankyou”, take them, and then ditch them in the bin, than to reject some cards.

For free entertainment the show outside the town hall is worth half an hour or so of people’s time. Things are turning very nasty I hear. The gang must be feeling the pressure and the electoral officers are spending half their time ordering everyone back from the front door.Who says that local council elections are tame compared to state and federal. The knives are out.

All was polite during my time there.
Macca,
It wasn’t that folks were just taking the literature that was handed to them, it was what they were asking for. I was there quite late and by that time the volunteers handing out the literature were winding down and chatting amongst themselves and many of the voters had to make an approach to get the literature they were after.
Lots of Lipshutz signs on houses in the near vicinity too.

Maybe the how to vote cards of the gang members are more attractive to many of the early voters as they are unable to vote on a Saturday so do not be influenced by your observation at the pre-polling. Let’s hope it is a sample not typical of the majority of electors who will attend the booths on Saturday 27 October.
