A few days ago I reread the Glen Eira Residents report on their forum. One of the points of discussion was whether candidates were connected in any way with political parties. Some saw this as irrelevant to local government whilst others argued that it was important. Mary Delahunty seemed to be the strongest advocate for the former position.
My letter box has been awash with flyers and when I voted earlier this week I made it a point of collecting all the flyers that were being given out. Nearly all of them imply some political party backing even though we currently have only 2 or 3 claiming to be entirely “independent”. It stretches the limits of credibility when flyers and how to vote cards have Danby on Delahunty’s card; Crean on Lobo’s; Southwick and other luminaries on Hyams; Vlahos authorising Dudeja’s and so on.
All of this is fine I suppose. It would be most refreshing though if all candidates were a little more forthcoming with the truth. With the Greens, at least we know where their overall philosophy and policies come from. I don’t think the same can be said for many of the others.

I understand your feeling D. Evans. I have been caught in this confusion myself. In an earlier post (which I can no longer find) I mentioned Mary was a Labor candidate as I believed Mary made no secret of her party membership (and I say, good on her for that). But Mary has now contacted me and wishes me to clarify her position with readers. So here goes – as I understand it, Mary is a member of the Labor Party, but is not a Labor Party or endorsed candidate and is therefore running as an independent in these local elections.

The Greens have had their deposit paid by the party. This appears to be at odds with the LGA.

We do not believe that there is anything in the LGA which would support this claim.

at least she mentions the racecourse. No other candiate would have the guts to mention it (although Forge mentions it slightly). They know how powerful the MRC is so they have no chance of delivering. Even at the MCG the police control the traffic but not in Caulfield!.

Its actually a quote from Danby, member for Melbourne Ports. Southwicks backflip and then inaction over the racecourse agreement has turned it into not only a local but also a State and Federal issue.

D Evans – Yes I saw you at the Glen Eira Town Hall. I was a distributor of how to vote card for a new candidate. You say with the Greens, at least we know where their overall philosophy and policies come. The Greens are holding the b ll s of labour in the lower house. People should not vote for Greens as they suck. I refused to take their How to Vote Card this afternoon.

Yes I agree we should refrain from voting for the Greens after seeing how the Green party representative votede in favour of the C60 – 1500 residences, 15,000 square metres of retail and a twenty storey office building all with no open space, the controversial cheap “Land Swap”, planned re-routing of Smith Street, the “sale” of council land – cheap (AT BARGAIN BASEMENT PRICE) for the MRC Becton Development , the drainpipe or tunnel entry to the racecourse on a narrow path where a toddler cannot walk beside the carer in the manure scented air and a dangerous non existant fence for toddler protection, many kilometres of fences dividing up what now seems only the pip of the racecourse reserve. More traffic directed in by large Hume Highway like signs directing traffic into the MRC Carpark (the pip area) ONLY A FEW CENTIMETRES FROM THE UNFENCED TODDLER”
No word from the Green to have the park made good and available for residents… If this was being Green then my admiration for the Greens was lost in the dark tunnels.
Ther seems to e no interest by that green member to suggest alternative open space, suggest a pocket parhk around C60
