Magee’s barking up the wrong tree. He would be better off asking for information on how many locals are using our sports grounds as opposed to outsiders.
If he’s after attention to get training removed then he’s got buckleys and none. The gang already caved in under the so called agreement. There’s no time line to get rid of training and that will remain as long as the mrc want it to. The last thing that this place needs is another sporting ground. They’ve tried it with Booran Reservoir and now they’re trying it with the racecourse – despite the fact that the agreement was signed off on on the basis of “passive” recreation areas.

Nothing wrong with people that do not live in Glen Eira using facilities that our rates pay for. Did you ever go for a swim at the beach or even a walk along a well maintained path looking over our glorious Port Phillip Bay. Thanks to Bayside and Port Phillip Councils. The parks around the MCG are maintained by the City of Melbourne. I won’t go on. Do you get it?

Maybe Jim could organise to build a few more basketball courts to help the biggest sporting organisation, McKinnon Basketball Association. Hear they don’t turn people away but have run out of courts to run both boys and girls domestic competitions.

Thank goodness some posters here aren’t on Council. Otherwise we would have a municipality full of poop filled parks for dogs only. Sporting clubs fulfil an extremely useful social and health function. They use far less park time than dog exercisers. Learn to share people. Onya Jim!
Oh! And we do have a very spoiled dog.

Passive recreational space is the poor cousin in Glen Eira. Sports fields of all varieties dominate parks. They are vast expanses of uninteresting sights, cost a fortune to upkeep and maintain and sporting groups are also a minority of the population. If you’re on about sharing, then those who don’t play sport and would like to have some things like vegetable gardens, flower displays, beautiful and well maintained trees too. Instead most parks have a huge proportion of their acreage as open, ugly spaces with a few goal posts stuck at the ends. And don’t tell me that I can “use” this as well. It would be like sitting in the middle of a green desert – treeless, waterless, benchless. If we’re on about sharing, then share the land, not just the time.

More open space is lost to car parks and huge pavilions or grandstands. Bailey Reserve isn’t finished yet. Wait and you’ll see the skate ring moved out for more cars. Is this passive or active because it is for sure counted as open space. What a joke.

The sports ground investigation is rather concerning to me. I have a feeling it may set the fate of the Booran Reservoir. By establishing a case for more sports grounds I fear that the Booran Reservoir will be completely given over to sports clubs.
The public consultation over the Booran Reservoir closed in June last year – and since then not a word from council. No report. No feedback. No plan.
The online submissions clearly showed majority support for passive recreation with a significant number supporting incorporation of a community garden.
My suspicion is that council have delayed any progress on the reservoir site because the community feedback does not match their preferred option. A report which will inevitably conclude that Glen Eira has a shortage of sporting grounds will provide the justification for council to ignore the community once again.

Glen Huntly, people also need to remember that there is no budget funds set aside for Booran Reservoir for years to come. It will lie dormant and unused, whilst the lament about lack of open space will continue when it suits for political reasons orchestrated by the powers that be.

Yes, I am quite aware of that. However, what are the chances that if they decide we need more sporting grounds, the development of the Booran Reservoir might move up their priorities? And what about the Elsternwick Plaza – no budget for that either but I’m betting it might be upgraded before Booran. Priorities can change, funds can be found. Perhaps if they made Booran Reservoir into a carpark it might get done sooner.

interesting a community vegie garden could be be set up now with elbow grease of residents (and a hole knocked into a wall) but it would then make it to hard to build an artificial soccer pitch then

Elsternwick Plaza will be getting money from the State Government. Just have a look at the lovely picture in Leader of Cr Hyams, Southwick MP, and Elsternwick Traders Association. That is what it is about. Politics and appropriate business community support. The Council will only contribute to that development. Booran Reservoir does not yet have such political support from pollies or the business community. Stiff chadder.

We could do with more diverse open space, we have lots of sports fields in our landscapes, People want places to plant gardens, because all these new apartments that are springing up don’t have places to do this
Costa on Gardening Australia, showed us how we can plant verge gardens, the last program that harvested the veggies and the street party with all the food made by the neighbors was great
One problem with Glen Eira is that it limits it thinking to a very small box. Even the radicals on this blog seem conservative in their ideas
I can see how we could do so much more with what we have, and it wouldn’t cost much, My local area has so many lawn areas in parks that never seem to get used, these places could be planted with trees or veggies or both, or water ponds, or bird gardens or local vegetation pockets.
I played Netball but want treed shady parks.
