There were 2 Rights of Reply Tuesday night from Pilling and Magee. Both were supposedly in response to the Southwick remarks in parliament regarding the removal of the Caulfield Park trees. We highlight these as the supreme example of political grandstanding (especially by Magee) and the puppet performance by Pilling reading out his scripted lines. Laugh out loud, dear readers!
PILLING: claimed that Southwick was ‘not correct’ and that his statements were ‘inaccurate and misleading’. Pilling denied that the cutting down of trees was on ‘party lines’ but that at ‘every’ stage there was ‘unanimous support’ by councillors. The ‘true number of trees removed is 21′ and many of these trees were in the range of ’15 to 20 years old’. Southwick only contacted council via a letter dated 9th December and on the 12th Pilling answered. He then quoted from that response letter. He read that the alternate proposal won’t ‘address or solve’ the ‘purpose of these works’ and that there was misunderstanding about the ‘need for buffer zones’. The proposed ‘works’ are the same that happened to ovals 5, 6, and 7 in 2008 and over 300 new trees planted. The master plan was ‘adopted after extensive community consultation’ and council has ‘reviewed’ it to ascertain whether the proposed action is ‘still relevant’. Said this was ‘the case in this instance’ and ‘even more so because of increasing pressures’ of high density development. The works are about ‘reducing risk and ensuring safety’. Went on to state that the works were advertised over a month ago and that ‘all councillors’ have had ‘continued dialogue’ with residents and as a result ‘endeavoured’ to ‘reduce the number of trees removed’. The ‘benefit’ of the ‘reconfiguration’ is that ‘over 100 children’ can now ‘participate in organised sport’. All of this is highlighted on council’s website. Concluded that the ‘long term benefits to the community’ outweigh the ‘short term loss’.
MAGEE: said that he ‘appreciated’ Pilling’s right of reply for council but that he wanted to do his own right of reply. Started by saying that Southwick ‘made a couple of fatal errors’ in his speech. Magee then spoke about pre-election and how Southwick had promised to ‘open up the racecourse’. ‘Well now the centre of the racecourse is full of fences’ and a ‘failed miserable playground which is only used during racedays’. Quoted Southwick as claiming this is a Greens/Labor council. Magee then said that the works are part of the ‘warm season grasses’ program and that Lipshutz moved that motion and ‘the last time I looked Cr Lipshutz was not a Labor person’ and he doesn’t remember Lipshutz ‘sitting next to me in an ALP meeting singing ‘Solidarity forever’. Thought that it was ‘disappointing’ that Southwick ‘does say these things’. He could have rung council but instead said something in parliament and Magee will now say something back and Southwick will probably do the same and it is all ‘very childish’. ‘What’s important here is that we are all working for the benefit of our community’ and getting more open space. ‘If Mr Southwick had kept his promise and opened the centre of the racecourse’ then council wouldn’t need to ‘pull down’ the trees because there would be enough sporting grounds. Claimed that the ‘last thing’ council wants to do is remove the ‘loving’ trees. If Southwick ‘wants to condemn us for it, then I condemn him’ and ‘this is his fault’, ‘his inaction, his broken promise’. Southwick didn’t ‘open the centre of the racecourse’ and left council ‘with no alternative’. Said that ‘it’s atrocious that we have to do something like this to a beautiful park like Caulfield park – but we have to’ and ‘it’s Mr Southwick’s fault, not council’s’.

Fair dinkum, I’m cringing reading this shit from Magee. It wasn’t Southwick that set up the gang of four who gave the mrc all they wanted on a silver platter and it wasn’t southwick who helped create the lousy playground. That was Pilling, Newton, Lipshutz, Esakoff and Hyams and Magee didn’t say a bloody word.
How removing trees gets more open space is the best bit. Stop wanking Magee.
Pilling is nearly as bad. If 100 kids playing sport is worth all this then what happens when 100 people object to c60. They aren’t as important as the sport and the long term effects are forever. The bullshit that comes out of this council is amazing and they can sit there and say this crap with a straight face. Sack them all.

Our Jim Magee better consult with his constituants before they move in with the chainsaws at Centenary Park. The East/West tunnel protests will pail into insignificance. A Council of hot air led by the the administration.
We pay our rates and want to know what is being planned….and have a say in the planning!
C’mon Tucker Ward Councillors, show some balls.

Magee is right the buck stops with Southwick, If he took a stand we would have the sports grounds at the race course. Basically what is going to happen now is more parks are going to be reconfigured to allow more ovals. They will be probably be forced to buy overpriced properties on the edges of existing parks and reconfigure to make an extra oval eg at Packer and Murrumbeena. Caulfield Racecourse would have been perfect in that there no trees and racing does not want trees. It would be perfect for sportsgrounds instead of its real use which is a car park,

I can’t concur with you that the buck stops with Southwick. I’m more inclined to agree with Alec. Southwick’s promises were for election purposes. He felt the pulse at the time and realised this would ensure a few more votes. He did not deliver – that is true. However, Lipshutz, Esakoff, Hyams, and Pilling were already elected with the responsibility of serving residents. They weren’t in election mode. Southwick is not to blame for the tactics employed by Newton and this committee and the simple truth that all community views were ignored. They had the option of:
(a) not establishing a special committee but including all councillors. This they refused to do and deliberately sidelined others like Penhalluriack and Forge
(b) Negotiations were done in secret and the results show that the MRC got exactly what it wanted with no thought to social and environmental impacts for residents.
(c) the centre of the racecourse was the same. When people complained about the playground, fences, and so forth, the plans were rubber stamped.
(d) the MRC has been terrible in its relationship with locals such as proper notice of traffic management and erecting fences all over the site in complete defiance of the plan. I would like to know if council has done anything about this or turned a blind eye as is their want.
(e) The terms of the agreement haven’t been met. Fences are still up, Queen’s Ave is a junk pile and dangerous for cyclists and council spent money on erecting gates to force people onto the roads.
There are probably more things, but I’ve forgotten them. The point I’m trying to make is that none of this is Southwick’s fault as Magee claims. Council has always had it in its power not to succumb to the wishes of the MRC and to enforce the agreement to the hilt. They haven’t and they won’t.
I would also think that Magee’s claims about setting up a few sporting ovals in the centre of the racecourse is nothing but another furphy. First, it will never happen, and secondly even with 5 new ovals council admits that there aren’t enough sports fields to cater for the growing demand. Blaming Southwick instead of looking at themselves is the standard tactic of Newton. Nothing is ever their fault – it’s always someone elses.

Off topic, but worth noting as to the incompetence of the department and council in their unholy rush to ram through the residential zones. It’s not too much to expect when something as important as this C110 amendment would have been gone through with a fine tooth comb and proof read countless times. Clearly not! From today’s Victorian Gazette –
Planning and Environment Act 1987

The 2005 Council was sacked partially because of Political interference. Watch out Council because this is the game you are playing.I am non political but active within the Community and I can tell you that Southwick is a great State Representative. It’s about time you all realised that the Racing Industry is a vital part of our States economy and therefore untouchable.Move on.

1. Total backflip over C60 and overdevelopment
2. Along with Council, falsely claiming credit for the MRC’s landscaping (including fences) of the ever shrinking centre of the racecourse
3. Unable to prepare an accurate Curriculum Vitae
If this is what makes a “great state representative” the earlier ones must have been real crunkers

maybe Matthew Guy will replace him at the next election. He is one man who can really claim some credit for building Glen Eira!

In the unlikely event that the Libs retain government, how can you demote a demonstrably mediocre backbencher?

Did you run for Council at the last election? Sounds just like someone who did and who is in fact politically aligned and someone who poo poos others referencing GE Debates!
December 20, 2013 at 10:45 AM
They’re politicians—reciting the lines provided by their commercial benefactors is what they do. Issues of open space and equity will never go away, and neither GECC nor State Government have a strategy for solving current problems. Bit by bit, incrementally, by stealth if necessary, there is less open space available per person in Glen Eira. It is deliberate. It is policy. It has bipartisan support from both Liberal and Labor, at State and Local level. Cr Magee’s outburst is hypocritical. He is part of a council that has voted to reduce per capita open space repeatedly. Council’s proposed Open Space Strategy advocates a small local open space [~300sqm] to service an area predicted to increase by 1600 people. If that is an acceptable ratio, then little wonder the Strategy canvasses the possibility of selling off existing open space.

Minutes from Tuesdays meeting still not on the website at 3.22, well after Newtons 12pm KPI. Suppose when you’ve been gifted a five year contract by the Jellybacks you can forget about meeting objectives.
December 20, 2013 at 4:20 PM
In fairness the minutes have now gone up and they record that the in camera items were not concluded until Thursday evening. Hence the possible excuse for the delay in posting the minutes.
As per the minutes we draw readers’ attention to the fact that the Centenary Park pavilion was cited in the budget as costing $1.3 million. It has now gone up another MILLION! Further, the Duncan Mackinnon ‘contract’ remain secret. So much for a wonderful tendering process where council reveals all. In previous posts we have quantified the number of items that appear for in camera resolution and the number that are then announced. The record of Glen Eira Council on this aspect alone is abysmal!
December 20, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Newton too busy spending his new wealth shopping to worry about his job. I hope he’s buying locally madeproducts!
The area of racecourse should be called the compass point.
