Readers might remember a planning application dating from 2011, where the developer applied for a permit for two buildings consisting of 80+ units, both 4 storey, and naturally reductions in car parking. Council bent over backwards to ‘assist’ in that they ceded part of their car park and were supposedly reimbursed with a public toilet worth about $300,000. Now, three years on, the developer wants more! We’ve also uploaded another application that give us a glimpse of the concrete canyons that are being created.

Both are quite modest – the developers could have requested any height they want since there are no height limits. No car parking and no loading bay. Seems like a small price to pay for a public toilet.

Bentleigh, East Bentleigh, McKinnon, Carnegie are all being ripped apart by inappropriate development. Hyams and his buddies have got a lot to answer for. We’ve got total duds as councillors because they believe every bit of crap that Newton puts up. Ultimately they are responsible for ruining this city.

According to the local law, the decision to ask the minister to exempt Council from undertaking community consultation for the zone implementation should have been made at a full open Council Meeting (ie not a behind closed door briefing session). The zones were implemented without public consultation occurring, in response to public questions Council repeatedly denied it had decided to implement the zones without community consultation. The zone announcement was made on the 5th August, 2013 and gazetted 23rd August, 2013, which given that the wheels of government move slowly equates to record time.
Councillors unanimously voted to accept the zones at an open Council Meeting after the event.
Is this Council doing it’s job – I think not.

Devolpers run this town, Hyams and his buddies, just agree that, that’s a good thing.

I am greatly heartened to see that the residents, particularly in the growth zones are awakening and making their opposition to the new zones known. Check out the Canberra Times – http://www.canberratimes.com.au/victoria/liberal-mp-accused-of-breaking-party-ranks-over-inappropriate-development-20140907-10dlrh.html
My only concern is will they maintain the rage and make a difference in the next Council election.
Not one incumbent Councillor deserves to be re-elected. By the time the 2016 election rolls around
. 6 of them (Esakoff, Pilling, Lobo, Magee, Lipshutz, Magee) will have been at the helm for 8 or more years. Quite simply that’s way too long when they are without the skills, nous and expertise required to lead in a dynamically changing environment. 8+ years of their reactive leadership has given rise to issues confronting us today.
. the 3 Councillor’s elected for the first time in 2012 (Delahunty, Okotel and Sounness) quickly abandoned their election platforms and opted, by jumping on board with the 6, to focus on their political futures. Within months of their election they voted in 12 stories in Carnegie and all, without any questioning, voted in the new zones.
Glen Eira needs new blood at the helm. That new blood needs to have the skills, nous and expertise so lacking in the current incumbents. I’m just hoping, that the current opposition to what’s happening takes root and grows. Residents need to become involved with local affairs, take action and manage to make real lasting changes. Unless that happens, residents will always be on the back foot – they may temporarily win a skirmish or two but they will never win long term.
