You are being unnecessarily cautious here GlenEira.
Although technically correct the chances of prosecution are negligible.
See the following article
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/opinion/the-value-of-our-names-20120907-25jbu.html
Perhaps certain people have already threatened you with prosecution. If so, it’s an empty threat. In this election it’s vital that the community is able to speak out – anonymously or otherwise.

Agree with most of that. The key word is ‘promote’ in my estimation. The MAV website says:
“Any written material promoting your campaign,
including electoral advertisements, handbills,
pamphlets, notices etc., must have the name and
address of the person who has authorised the material
at the end”

The laws are there to stop unfair behaviour. Anonymous blogging may be saying untruthful things about a candidate. All the bloggers can spend their efforts attacking the town hall staff.
Anyway no one is ever really anonymous on the internet. Most people can be tracked. Well done Glen Eira.
September 25, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Agree with that. However, that catch-all comment applies to all harsh, unreasonable and unfair comments not merely at pre-election time.
Also, I’m not sure any action would be a matter for the Council as Colin indicates. Rather the VEC.
That said, a prudent approach is to not publish if you’re in doubt.

I don’t blame the moderators for being cautious. This blog has been a thorn in the side of Newton and the gang ever since it started. They hate it because it reveals and publicises the truth about what’s going on. Don’t forget that this is really a trigger happy administration and bunch of councillors. How many people have they threatened in the past. I know of three for starters. Then don’t forget that Newton doesn’t give a hoot about lawyers costs. People just need to be a little more careful about what they write and leave it to the good judgement of the moderators. Anyway whose going to check if you put down John Smith of Murrumbeena? Papers don’t print full addresses and this is public media too.
September 25, 2012 at 9:16 PM
If the VEC gets a complaint they will go after the publisher, Glen Eira. Would you risk being prosecutted?
September 25, 2012 at 9:58 PM
The VEC don’t have the resources or the inclination to prosecute bloggers. Name me one blogger who has been prosecuted. Or any major media outlet – they all allow anonymous comments on electoral matters.

Legislation is always nearly a decade behind technological advances such as social media and, as with all forms of media, it can be abused. The other side of the coin as Glen Huntly suggests is that antiquated laws do nothing but place a limit on genuine public discourse.
This election is of great importance to residents. The clamour for change that has been evident in the past few weeks and throughout all the recent community forums is unquestionably in favour of such change. Over the next month I will be doing my homework. I want to know what each candidate’s views are on consultation and planning in particular. I want to know how much homework they have done in order to be ready to face the bulwark of opposition that any progressive minded candidate advocating cultural and organisational change is sure to face from an entrenched administration that belongs in the age of dinosaurs. I also want to know which, if any, of these candidates have been funded by political parties or whether they are truly independent.

And to add to the D Evans comment above- How can we find out candidates preference alignments?
And also political affiliations of each candidate?
These are critical elements for voters to consider….
September 26, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Dear Elsternwick,
preferences will come out in about two weeks time. We will keep people informed. At the moment we imagine there are plenty of discussions and bargaining going on for all those candidates who have as yet not finalised their preferences.
We believe that GERA has sent out a list of questions to each candidate. One of these questions we believe covers the political affiliations issue. It is also our understanding that whichever candidate chooses to, these responses to the questions will appear on the GERA website.
September 29, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Hi Elsternwick, Glen Eira and Others,
I’m one of the Greens candidates in Tucker Ward and we had a meeting on Wednesday night to discuss and decide on preferences which is now complete for all 3 wards (Camden, Rosstown and Tucker) and we have lodged these with the VEC and are awaiting approval. I’ll just talk about Tucker Ward and you can contact the Greens candidates in other wards (Neil Pilling and Wilmars Mikelsons in Rosstown and Thomas Sounness in Camden).
My biggest challenge was working out who everyone was aligned with as most of the ‘candidates’ are dummies or running mates with no real campaign or interest in getting elected.
When we set preferences we had a number of objectives, primarily to get Greens or other progressive candidates on Council and vote out existing councillors. Near as I can figure the various camps in Tucker Ward look like:
HYAMS LIBERAL: Hyams, De’ATH, Dudeja, Cade
LOBO LABOR: Lobo
MAGEE LABOR: Magee, Andonopoulos
BUCH: Buch, Kay, Myers
GREENS: Hedger, Read
INDEPENDENT: Gatoff, Pilcher
The key to all of this is the numbers and the vote flows by preference which I’m happy to chat about in the lead up to the election.

Brett, not sure if Glen Eira is big into sustainability and the like but if you are elected into one of the 3 Tucker ward seats can you assure the residents that you will act on their behalf and not be convinced otherwise by a group of officers who think (and probably know) that what they want for Glen Eira isn’t necessarily what we want.
Basketball allocation at GESAC is probably one area that has affected many voters in Glen Eira. Next football season ground allocation will also be a concern to many. Are you able to make a stand and ensure that Glen Eira ratepayers have access to these facilities along with the groups that deliver the best competitions. To make it plain, will you work to see that both the McKinnon Basketball Association get access to GESAC and the Caulfield Bears retain their tenure at Koornang Park?
