We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
At last somebody who is willing to inform the residents of Glen Eira as to what these new zones mean to you, rather than inform you that this is what you will get.
Will all of us – the Anonymous including Mr, Smart Aleck, D. Evans will attend the forum or just criticise anything and everything for the sake of it. Let us stand and be counted.
Very little good has ever come out of an elected body pushing through significant legislation (in this case, to quote Mayor Hyams, “the biggest change to planning in the history of Glen Eira”), with little information being presented and without public scrutiny. Glen Eira’s handling of the implementation of the zones is appalling – for a body that proclaims it actively encourages community participation and is open and transparent the implementation of the zones is anything but. Very little and very skewed information has been presented, statements of “direct translation” are blatantly incorrect, no community input (let alone an information session before or after) and Council is busy trying to deny they did it while at the same time being self congratulatory.
I have been researching the zones and must admit that like most things it is a two edged sword – there are positives and negatives. The impact of those positives and negatives are dependent on the zone content (neighbourhood residential zone vs general residential, residential growth and commercial zones). The expansion of “housing diversity” areas, pockets of high density/commercial zones in previous minimal change areas and changes to activities previously not allowed (now allowed as a right) impacts all residents are some of the negatives. Of the positives, the much touted benefits of height limits and no. of dwellings per lot included in the Neighbourhood Residential Zone were available under the previous planning scheme however Council either refused to implement them (height limits) or frequently ignored them (no. of dwellings) – so their introduction is welcomed
There are many more changes in the new zones – since GE Council stands alone in failing to provide residents with the information or input, its now up to the residents to find it out for themselves. I think it’s great that a residents group is taking the initiative and putting on an information session – good luck to them
Yes, good luck to the group. When residents end up doing the job of council then another black mark goes against the dictators who are running Glen Eira.
Off topic – the Moonee Valley Racecourse Development. The link below will take readers to that council’s submission to the Advisory Committee in response to the racing club’s application. Please note the position taken by Moonee Valley (so different to Glen Eira’s) and the amount of work that has gone into their submission. There are countless appendices for every single component presented by the racing club. See: http://mvcc.vic.gov.au/about-the-council/council-meetings.aspx

Even the “this is what you will get” ain’t the full story.

Hope Sunday’s event is a resounding success and that residents get a good idea of what is in store for them no thanks to Newton and others.
