We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
Methinks Napthine should be thinking of how to raise the standard of debate in the State Parliament, which has been turned into a farce. No wonder the population no longer trusts Politicians.
The Leader has got a story on this and they say that once a councillor is booted out of a meeting that he or she won’t be able to vote. A great state of affairs when elected reps can’t do what they are put in place to do. The gang would love this.
How typical of State Government to ignore the major contributing factors behind lack of confidence, accountability, and transparency in Local Government, and go for something so self-evidently a sideshow. Jeanette ignores completely that Mayors are also councillors, can also misbehave, and if they have a sufficiently large faction or clique supporting them, can silence all opposition.
We already have in LGA provisions dealing with misconduct, serious misconduct, and gross misconduct. Under s76C Council must also develop and approve a Councillor Code of Conduct and under Part 5 it has the power to make Local Laws. GECC has Local Law covering misbehaviour in Council meetings. The problem isn’t the lack of powers, just that they can be easily abused or ignored whenever deemed politically convenient.
The one thing that the Member for Shepparton and Minister against Local Government did get right is that politicians are incapable of governing themselves.
I am embarrassed by anything this State Government does and I don’t trust any of their motifs. The State Parliaments recent behavior is an absolute disgrace especially the Speaker. Do you really think any Mayor would remove a Councillor from a meeting? Get real.
“Do you think a Mayor of Glen Eira would remove a Councillor from a Meeting?” – forget “get real” the answer is absolutely!!! It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Esakoff’s lament is that such rules weren’t in place when Penhalluriack was a Councillor, Hyams would have exited Penhalluriack and Lobo countless times if he could have.
The test now is for Pilling and Lobo; it’s a matter of time, Lobo will be exited within 3 months of enactment. I have a bridge to sell to anyone who doubts.
How about the small inluence of liberal poiliticians to have the person from Frankston given a clean sheet after facing well ove twenty charges. AJust amazing or a little off?
Not unlike the Aust, Fair Work Commission taking 3 years to investigate Craig Thompson. Someone needed his vote as does the current Liberal Gov. need the guy from Frankston’s vote.

Might be a few other changes that make it through to the draft Bill that are long overdue. Sure to fire up the chattering class.

Generally a concern when State governments seek to meddle in the day-to-day affairs of duly elected municipal governments
