We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
Well, well – heads starting to roll over the messy way in which waiver of consultation was sought by Glen Eira and given by Matthew Guy perhaps? Council still having trouble finding the record of that meeting and decision Cr Okotel was looking for? That’s before we get to the implementation of the scheme itself…and the PR nightmare it has brought on council ahead of a state election…
In our dreams i expect…apparent to first timers at last council meeting that the whole admin consists of stale old male fossils, who have been in positions for years. Maybe some are finally falling off their perches into retirement. Timing is intriguing though…
In a “normal” council one might expect some informative media release. Clearly not the case in Glen Eira. We might speculate as follows:
1. Akehurst’s official title these days is City Development
2. Torres is ‘manager’ of Transport & Planning
So a few possibilities present themselves –
1. Is Torres getting a promotion to Director?
2. Is this a new position, or is Akehurst being nudged into ‘retirement’?
3. Or, are Glen Eira residents about to fork out thousands of more dollars to create 6 Directorships in this ‘industry leader’ council?
4. Or are there any other possible permutations?
It’s stretching the truth a bit to say that Council serves us, but LGA does at least list primary and secondary objectives along with functions and powers. They serve some of us some of the time.
It was stunning to read that Council has an ambitious transport agenda, as it has been kept so well hidden that few of us knew of its existence. The new incumbent will have to make it a high priority to discover where the agenda is documented.
The biggest challenge for the CEO will be finding somebody who meets the requirements listed. “Talented, innovative planning professional” is a bit of an oxymoron. “Demonstrated knowledge, skills and achievement in strategic city development and planning” rules out any incumbent officer, as does “thorough understanding of state government legislation and metropolitan planning policies”. “Political acumen of the highest order” is wonderfully vague—but hopefully doesn’t mean they pay attention to the rich and powerful at the expense of the rest of us.
One can only hope it’s not a job for one of the boys because transport planning is a non sequitur in this municipality.
Not only is there no correlation between the two, ratepayers funds wasted on unnecessary road curbing, channeling, islands, speed humps et al is bordering on scandalous. While the Mayor and his merry band of troglodytes sit largely unquestioningly by as the officials go about their wastefulness.
Spot on. Transport had zilch to do with the Council. Same as gay marriage. They must put something in the water up there at the town hall. Maybe someone should test the pipes.
Akehurst is retiring, after some decades of service to the machine, hopefully he will spend a large part of his retirement years defending his nesteggs from inappropiate developments.
If he is retiring it may not be the end for Glen Eira long suffering ratepayers. It would be a fair guess that he is on a defined benefits super plan. Most of these need topping up as they were designed when people died at a much younger age. The good burgers of Glen Eira could well be paying a retired director a some years to come

Why have a director of transport planning – it’s got nothing to do with them. They can’t even get the bus to go past GESAC

only the poor use buses, and they don’t want riff-raf at the pool mixing with their little middle class mollycoddled brats
