Magee was tonight elected Mayor – unopposed. He was nominated by Sounness and accepted the nomination.
Lipshutz nominated Okotel for Deputy Mayor. Delahunty was also nominated.

Delahunty elected Deputy – 5 votes to 4

Nothing will change. The staff would have anticipated this outcome and will be waiting in the long grass for Jim and Red Mary. The meetings will become more strung out as Delahunty thinks she is in Parliament.

Pleased for both. Delahunty is still a fighter for residents and as Magee isn’t standing again I believe I don’t mind him getting the robes.
However, as has been said the municipality is run by the administration so it matters little who is wearing the robes. The admin possess the information and therefore the power and the councillors by-and-large are too weak and/or slothful to take them on.
It’s a sad fact of life that we think we elect a genuine representative and fighter for the people but we invariably end up with just a politician.

Outcome a case of last man standing. Wouldn’t have looked too good if Esakoff or Hyams got the gold chain again. Lipshutz too busy and does his dirty work in the background. That leaves Pilling – a dud and he had a go. Okotel too new and also a dud. Lobo not a hope in hell. Souness, well what’s there to say and that leaves Magee and Delahunty both of whom have been sidling up to the gang big time anyway. Musical chairs at $95k a pop.

Agree Pilling has failed to live his political principles.
Intriguing story on Lateline tonight. A survey by the Museum of Australian Democracy found a very high percentage wanted a right to recall elected representatives if they aren’t performing as promised. Now it would make for interesting times if marked dissatisfaction over an elected representatives performance could force him/her back to the polls. That would focus a few minds ensuring they actually represented those who put them there rather than act as little more than messengers for officials.

Congratulations Jim and Mary.
While, as others have said, the administration runs the show and past Mayor and Deputy Mayor appointments have been awarded to either retain the stranglehold (Esakoff (3xM), Hyams (2xM), Lipshutz (DM) or reward past favours (Pilling (M)) rather than merit, Therefore, I see a faint glimmer of hope in these appointments. Particularly, since Magee was unopposed and Okototel (undeniably unsuitable for the Deputy role and highly questionable as a Councillor) was outvoted.
Having finally broken through, I hope these two are up to what is before them. Both Labor supporters and a predicted Labor State Government means the political connections are there but who knows what impact that will have. Both face a tough year in office,
I wish them luck and hope like hell they manage to make some effective and long overdue changes.

I wouldn’t be too optimist . Neil Pilling was a Green and I believe most of his early supporters fell away. The only difference when a councillor becomes mayor is that they get a parking spot right near the front door.

Time to do what is best for labor party.

what affect will this have on the racecourse?
November 12, 2014 at 3:16 PM
I do not see too much changing under Magee and Delahunty. Both have fully embraced the rubbish about planning and think the administration is wonderful.

Magee and Delahunty will be judged by the residents. Birds of same feather ……. As far as Pilling, we were informed yesterday that all Councillors spoke good about him and his splendid performance as a Mayor. You guys are fools as your knowledge stops at the parking spot. Only gutless and DH’s will shout over the roof. Let the elected Councillors do their job while you stop your mother goosing.

They spoke well of him cos he became one of them. When you get endorsement from Esakoff, Libshutz, Hyams et al and the admin it means you have acted in a manner which suits them, As distinct from fighting for the people who elected him and who he vowed to fight for when first seeking to be a councillor.
As one poster said Pilling’s support has fallen. You only have to look at his poll figures last over the last two elections to see that.
I doubt he’d be re-elected next time but for Greens endorsement.
Sold us out big time.

Wait and see if they are worth the positions. Time will tell.

Officials run the show. It matters not who wears the robes.

Jim Magee made significant headway with Trustee mismanagement of the Racecourse public parkland – while the wheels of government move slowly, he got them moving.
I hoping he can do the same with Councillors and the Administration.

Go get them Magee. You have shown doing the extraordinary with the Racecourse public land. You now have bigger power. Clean them all out with the help of Sister Mary who will hopefully help you in the mission.
