We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
Magee’s constant sound bites are becoming embarrassing. First there was the one about McKinnon high school going up to ten levels. Now there’s the Virginia Estate gaff. Whether or not a new school in the area is needed remains a moot point. The certainty is that Gillon won’t be forced to sell any part of his land for a pittance and secondly why should he. Residential development is far more lucrative than selling a hectare or two to a state government that probably hasn’t the funds to build another school at around ten million or so – without counting the cost of the land.
If Magee is seeking popularity from residents then he would be better off insisting, as the letter writer says, to ensure that officers are doing their jobs properly and enforcing all local and state laws. Better still, how about insisting that the zones in East Bentleigh and elsewhere are revamped instead of voting in favour of development after development.
As a recent objector to the proposals at Virginia Park under C126 amendment I find it perplexing that Mr Magee would even suggest that the location be redeveloped for a school. One of the issues mentioned in C126 was traffic generation and parking disruption. With a school this particular issue would be heightened with traffic generation particularly during start and finish times along with associated parking issues in the local streets all day surely. And as mentioned above Gillon are only interested in profits and would not be selling their land for land value only when development is their goal.
Magee is suggesting giving land for a school in order to get the Gillion sponsored amendment through. That’s it!!!. The Glen Eira Administration wants the development to go ahead and the residents don’t. The gold will go to Gillon.
The thing is the developers and the planning department are in constant cohoots, residents can only react when the developers and the Administration decide it’s an appropriate time to “reveal”. Unless Magee can show a firm commitment from the government to build the schools (both primary and secondary) such talk is just mumbo jumbo. All it does is echo the developers aspirations (i.e. “if we build it, they will come”) for public transport to service the massive (4,600+ residences) public transport starved site. Yeah right!!!!. Magee doesn’t talk for the government but he does talk for the Administration and all he is doing is trying to soften residents opposition (which was substantial) while also giving our unthinking Councillors with a reason to approve.
As a resident opposing this massive over development, all this article does is indicate that Stage 2 in the Virginia Park stoush is fast approaching and we need to be ready for it.
Magee pays lip service to the unions. He probably hope they will help him stay on the Council. He would probably like help letter boxing and paying for his brochures. Soon he will be a former mayor and have to get a real job. I did notice he was not wearing the mayoral robes. Trying to imitate mayors in his home country.
Nothing original about Magee.

You are assuming that councillors know what they are talking about.

Mr. Magoo has done it again and again, and again
