The ABS has today released its latest figures for building permits covering the first quarter of the 2017/18 financial year. Glen Eira remains streaks ahead. When the size of this municipality is taken into account compared to some of the others, plus the fact that it has the lowest amount of public open space in the state, then these figures speak volumes about what is being imposed on the community in terms of density, sustainability, and general residential amenity!
We’ve uploaded the ABS data HERE
Below is our summary –

Our councillors are more interested in approving concrete bollards in parks when 99% of their job is to approve new developments. Lets hope that wiser minds at the state level take this job from local council and then we can have our councillors focusing on what the rate payers expect of them: parks/gardens/roads/cleanliness on the municipality; stop them punching above there weight viz let go of the ego!!!!!

The ratio of our public open space as mentioned in a post a fews day continues to shrink; with no sign of any of the 4 million dollar plus collected from our open space levy ever being used to buy additional or new open space.
What is alarming is no one in Glen Eira sustainability department has the courage to stand up and say that our existing open space cannot provide the services to the community that would be taken for granted as being normal elsewhere. This lack of open space problem will compound with rising temperatures; more severe flooding events and more pollution from the ever growing traffic volumes.
Tree loss though densification is also a growing problem; I estimate we already do not have enough open space for remedial tree planting to counter the heat-island effect from all the hard surfacing and concrete being shipped on mass into Glen Eira daily. What would be reasonable estimate of trucks carrying concrete into Glen Eira daily, 50 to 100 wouldn’t be unrealistic.

Quite simply a disgrace at every level.

I notice the council is getting a bit political with the racecourse. Article on front of council newsletter about dog agility park plus a bit about the new legislation before parliament and the implications of more land being available for the public. Sad news that Aquinta is in a bit of trouble.

It was interesting to not read that a United Nation report into dogs agility in Glen Eira. After a four year worldwide study on falling dog agility standards the UN ruled that due to lack of public open space and over crowding in dog parks within Glen Eira; Glen Eira dogs have fallen well below the average world standard in dog agility. The worldwide average standard was 8.3 out of 10, Glen Eira dogs scored a poor 6.2.
In response to this damning indictment the recreation staff in GE have pledged to reverse this declining doggy standards by designed a dog agility park. They say this will help put Glen Eira’s, Australian Terriers and Blue Heeler on a equal footing with German Shepard’s, Welsh Corgi’s, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Irish Setters, the pampered French Spaniels, the little known Chinese Shar-Pei,Tibetan Mastiff’s, and the lovable but mostly overweight Labradors even scored higher at 6.8.
Its sounds like a April fools day media release, but it isn’t. With all the services new open space could have provided residents in GE, a dog agility park tops the bill.
Does anyone else get the feeling we are increasingly being ruled by complete idiots.
