The following directive was gazetted today. It is a timely reminder that on top of COVID, councils and particularly our council, has to start exercising some real restraint in their spending. We seriously question the need to spend:
- $51+M on the redevelopment of the Carnegie Pool
- Borrowing of $60M in the next few years
- Millions on proposed tower car parks in Bentleigh & Carnegie

They’ve budgeted for 2% increase for the next ten years. That’s out the window now as should plenty of these useless projects. Hardly anyone wants a scaled down version of gesac. Just fix the bloody pool and let people enjoy what’s always been there and save squillions in the meantime.

It’s good that interest rates are so low. The multi-story car parks could be scrapped, residents wouldn’t miss them, and would be very grateful not having to suffer the prolonged chaos they will cause. The pool redevelopment could be changed to the 25 million option, that would leave us with a great new pool facility for half the price. Cutting back on the lawyers picnics at VCAT trying to defend the indefensible would save us a packet. Planting trees has to be cheaper than cutting them down, so getting trees back into the realm of positive would be cost effecting.

Time for total reform of local government. The culture of spend, spend, spend needs to be cut right out before we go broke. Back to basics – needs, not wants. Rates could easily be cut by 20 to 25% if all the extravagance was taken out. You don’t see pensions going up as fast as council rates.

I totally agree with Terry, It make me wonder about the leadership in the bureaucracy when I see a Masterplan completed in 2019 after a 3 stage public consultation process, disregarded and worker building something that was even considered let along recommended within the final document.
Why bother with all that considerable expense, if one year later all that consultation and findings are ignored and overridden by who knows who.
