We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
I am so angry. Burke should be sued for the lies he tells and they are lies by virtue of omissions in what he says. Applications are also assessed against rescode. Glory be! They have always been assessed against rescode and tossed out the window. This hasn’t come down like manna from heaven with the zone changes and even if this was true then there’s no guarantee that vcat will see this as mandatory.
Lobo also gets up my nose. A rude awakening. What did he think was going to happen when his council decided to up the ante by telling developers that 3 and 4 stories was now their right. If he didn’t realise then he is plain stupid or Newton sold them nothing but crap.
I hope to god that these bastards are voted into oblivion for what they’ve done.
Ms Athanasiou’s question is the most important issue that these articles raise – “At what point did Council decide that the residents don’t matter?” I don’t believe that residents have ever mattered in the decisions that this council makes. If they did, then there would have been extensive consultation, much publicity, and the full engagement with residents. Since none of these basic rights were accorded to residents, it’s obvious that people, ratepayers, are not worthy of being considered when their lives can be altered to such an extent. That is unforgiveable in itself. What’s even more unforgiveable is the unrelenting spin that council now inflicts on residents.
I don’t for one second believe that the new zones have afforded greater protection to residents. The protection has been provided to real estate agents and developers. They now know that what would not have been given a permit 18 months ago can now be granted one if they have anywhere near a reasonable plan and want three and four storeys. A year ago there were no applications for a four storey and 52 dwellings in a narrow street surrounded by single or double storeys. Now there is. It’s got nothing to do with population explosion and everything to do with profit making that has been aided and abetted by these councillors and the administration.
Using the Lipshutz analogy from Goebbels -say something often enough and the fools (councillors) will believe. Plus, it don’t matter if they don’t believe because Newton has them all caught by the short and curlies.
My oh my. The “rabble” are stirring at last. Wouldn’t go down too well with the white house so a new publicity campaign is sure to start. We will hear again and again how superb the planning department is. What wonderful jobs they have all done. How residents are now “protected” and so on and so on. What we won’t be informed about are the stupendous and ongoing stuff ups. Ah, but that’s what our rates are for – to keep pumping out all the bullshit courtesy of Burke, Hyams, Lipshutz, Esakoff, Delahunty, Okotel, Sounness, Magee,Lobo and the biggest turncoat – Pilling.
Tell me why when I pay the same rates as others in this municipality – some get their rights protected – others are just cast to the wind with no protection at all
Answer is simple. Developers make money out of Penang and other streets. Council has no inkling of what good planning means and they will support development to the hilt. If it’s a toss up between a developer and a resident the developer will win all the time and residents can cry into their beer.
Not so sure about the spin – what they are now dealing with is an ever increasing group of enraged residents who had a crash course on planning and real nitty gritty personal exposure to Councillors.
Continuing to spit out the self congratulatory spin will only inflame the situation, much better to pick some other topic
Trouble is they are running out of topics to pick from.
Can’t use
. planning – look at the Leader
. traffic or parking management – mentioned by all objectors – already congested and development will make it worse, yet it’ll get the green light
. consultation – didn’t do any on the zones
. open space – as with traffic and parking – mentioned by all objectors – minimal private open space and already excessive demand on nearby parkland
. trees – mature trees being felled as more concrete is poured because Glen Eira Council doesn’t want a tree policy. Besides remember the Caulfield Park dawn raid, still too early to revisit that one.
. safety – basic safety precautions (CCTV cameras in Bentleigh, Lighting in Carnegie) ignored but they keep packing them in
. Heritage – better not go their either, haven’t go over the damning independent panel report
. Neighbourhood Character – mentioned by all objectors – we haven’t done enough on that either
A Glenferrie Street, Nth C’field, resident (nr Glenferrie Rd) whose property backs on to a large development in Carnarvon Rd has erected a large, professional sign directed at anyone who buys into the new apartments. Obviously the build has had quite an impact on his/her life. Sign viewable from Carnarvon Rd (nr Dandenong Rd). Thought this area of Nth Caulfield had heritage protections but that does not seem to be the case.
