We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
Might as well start heading for the hills if 42000 additional dwellings are going to be crammed into 39 square km. It won’t take eighty years either given this council’s policies. More like twenty years the way things are going. Thank you very much Newton Akehurst Hyams Lipshutz Esakoff Pilling Okotel Delahunty Magee Lobo. Add in commercial and we might even get there in 15 years. Great planning all round.
Given that council’s report on how the new zones are travelling “proudly” stated that they are applying the Perato rule, ie 80% of development in 20% of the city, looks like most of those 42000 will be squished into a lot less than 39 square kms.
Actually, the quoted 80/20 split is closer to 70/30 which still means a lot of sardine containers will be built. It also shows how inadequate the Planning Scheme was and (since a hell of a lot of the scheme is referenced by the zones) still is
The two times mayor (thanks to that Lobo who voted for him) sold the residents lock, stock and barrel. We now know he made the deal with the liberals and pulled wool over other Councillors. In 2016 all residents should canvass to get him out and elect new Councillors like Newton Gatoff. Where is Newton?
Ain’t it interesting
. that the CEO is advising the Dept about changes (a done deal) to Virginia Estate zoning in July, 2013 and residents hear about it in August, 2014
. that the then Mayor (Jamie boy) put Council’s position to the Minister in May, 2013 – searching high and low I can’t find single reference to Council’s position in any minutes of a Council Meeting, all I can find is lot of responses to public questions on community consultation re the zones that all say “we haven’t decided yet”
Note that the minutes of October 15th 2013 do include a letter from Hyams to the Minister. Also note that there are references to ‘council’s position’ and ‘neutral translation’.
Champing at the bit is good old Andrew to rush the zones through. Never mind that councils were given a year to get their act together. This council was so gung ho and so eager to be named as the first that snivelling self serving kudos was allowed to come before professional and extensive planning that gives residents a fair chance. The myriad of errors, stuff ups, mistakes is now there for everyone to see. A terrific job of selling out councillors. You should be proud of your duplicity.
All conceivable tradition and principles of transparent and accountable government have gone out the window with what has happened over the new zones. It’s now very obvious that Hyams and senior administrators decided that residents weren’t worthy of being consulted. They further decided that everything would be done secretly. That meant that no formal resolutions by a full council was ever put up and that answers to public questions were lies or lies as a result of not providing full explanations. The end result is the same. It was a concerted and long term effort to get something through without any public scrutiny and councillors went along with this completely by the looks of things. That to me is the worst aspect of this whole stinking charade. Each and every one of them should resign immediately.
Anyone looking looking around Glen Eira and seeing the changes that have occurred in the past 10 years (not only in the growth zones and but also the NRZ) and all the associated issues which Council does little to address (loss of character, traffic, parking, drainage, open space, loss of trees, public safety), should shudder.
Council’s total failure to acknowledge or address the adverse impacts that the past 10 years development has created does not provide a warm and fuzzy feeling as they unleash 87 years worth worth supply (106 years if you take in the commercial zones) in one fell swoop with no community consultation.
Residents have every reason to complain when open and transparent processes are not followed in this council. I don’t see any excuse which exonerates councillors in this regard. All it would have taken was for 5 individuals to stand up and vote for consultation on this issue. They didn’t and hence secrecy and secret dealings were allowed to take place on what Hyams has called the most important and far reaching decision of the last 12 years. If it is so important then consultation should have been obligatory. At the very least there should have been a council resolution asking the minister to approve the amendment. Nothing like this happened. Councillors, either willingly or unwillingly, were accomplices in the biggest deceit ever perpetrated against the welfare of residents. That’s the bottom line and gives all those people now facing three and four storey slums on their doosteps the right to be mightily upset. I certainly did not vote for Newton and Akehurst. I voted for people who are sworn to act in the best interests of the community and the zones certainly are not in the best interests of thousands and thousands of residents. The only interests that have been served are those of developers and the egos of administrators and some councillors who may or may not have vested interests.
Ah jeez, elections are still two years away and “the you try brigade” is at it again. I guess it’s fruitless to hope they could come with a better argument.

Why are they in such a hurry to sell the place, do I smell kick-backs, get it while you can?
