We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
In comes the bulldozers and concrete and yet another treeless, boundary to boundary 3 storey box like structure comprising 50 1 & 2 bdr apartments over basement car parking will appear, complete with waived car parking and loading bay requirements. After residents have enjoyed about 12 months worth of construction activity and construction workers double parking, parking on the nature strip and across driveways, along will come residents using the street for their second car and then their primary car as they discover that accessing/exiting the basement car park is a pain in the bum. Rat runs will surely follow.
East Boundary Road is already a traffic nightmare. Quinns Road is off this main strip. Then there’s Gesac, the upcoming Virginia Estate development, the growth of the pub at the corner of Centre and East Boundary Road and many more developments along East Boundary itself. It’s a nightmare and will only get worse with this sort of zoning and building going on relentlessly. I am mentioning all of these things because I can’t see that council has done a single thing to assist residents. Their attitude has been that they will support and encourage any development regardless of the costs to local amenity. Anyone with any sense would get out of this area as quickly as they could. The tragedy is that this looks like it is happening all through Glen Eira and those areas earmarked for development.
“The City of Glen Eira is committed to protecting the amenity and neighbourhood character of the municipality”. That’s what GECC claims in the Planning Scheme. Their belief is that we should be grateful for the “numerous environmental, social and economic benefits” they are bestowing upon us via multi-unit development because it “reduces emissions, congestion and parking issues”. More of this sort of garbage can be found in the Municipal Strategic Statement, especially 21.04 Housing and Residential Development.
