We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
I attended last year’s meeting and no councillor in sight – even though it was Ron Torres who presented on the zones. We were told that all had been invited and only 2 had bothered to even answer and offer their apologies. Shows how much they give a stuff about residents and fronting up to more than four people at a time.
What is in it for the Councillors to show up. They will be abused and maybe yelled at. No one is going to thank them for their good work. Why would they bother fronting. You can’t beat city hall. They win all the time.
I would have thought that it is imperative that councillors show up. Part of their mandate is to represent the community and that means listening to what residents have to say. Since there wasn’t any opportunity for residents to voice an opinion about what was to befall them with the zones, then here’s the opportunity for these 9 councillors to actually front up and to listen to their constituents.
Councillors are also meant to be accountable to residents for their votes. I don’t know why councillors decided that these zones and where they are to go was good for residents. I’d like to hear why tiny little streets like Penang are ripe for three storeys. I’d also like to know how it is possible for streets that have heritage zoning to now be suitable for four storey developments. Councillors supposedly made the decisions. They need to be accountable to the people who pay them to explain and justify those decisions.
Your councilors will not be part of any solution, they are hopelessly compromised by the system, that slaves them and you. Its better they are not there.
The implementation of the zones provides a graphic example of how out of touch Councillors are. “The biggest change in planning in the history of Glen Eira” was retrospectively and unanimously voted in by Councillors. Council’s own meeting and assembly records show that Councillors had little input to, or knowledge of, either the Administrations determined zone and schedule content or zone mapping. Unlike all other metro Councils, neither before nor since the zones were implemented, has any meaningful information been presented to residents in either a community meeting or written form.
Over 12 months on, with the zones becoming a election issue, generating much adverse publicity in the local and state media and residents discomfort Councillors are choosing silence and absence rather than addressing the issues and facing residents.

Has this event been approved by Supreme Commander Newton? Will members of the Council be in attendance?

Our understanding is that all councillors have been invited to attend by GERA. Whether or not they show up is their decision.

Councillors get elected for a four year period, have no sitting opposition and only limited media scrutiny (http://www.theage.com.au/comment/dont-dismiss-nimbys-they-must-be-heard-on-planning-and-development-20141106-11gha9.html6/11/2014). Glen Eira Councillors are particularly good at avoiding the residents – when was the last time the Councillors made themselves available to residents in meet and greet sessions or held a ward specific gathering to update and get know the residents.
