IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA FOR OUR COUNCIL TO HOLD A DEBATE ON THE SUBJECT OF VOLTAIRE’S FAMOUS LINE…
I DISAGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAY BY I WILL DEFEND TO MY VERY DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT.
The feeling that all opposing views musty be put down may be abandoned and councillors would learn to listen and maybe Cr Lobbo may have a dood idea … he is there for his opinions to be freely expressed.
Yes, I too find this petty bitterness brought across the seas to be holding us back. We have all had to make fresh starts without worrying about history, and learning from our recent newcomers as well as our own racial stories(of DELIBERATE STARVATION AS IN MY ANCESTORS’ CASE) but what is the use of being here if we are to import ideas of fear and conflict which we hear in everyday news reports. It is a generally accepted fact that if ordinary citizens bear guns… then a shooting is more likely so I too am not pleased with this decision in my city. Who is this security company.
And as for Cr. Lobbo’s esteem I just do not know how he can put up with the treatment metered out to him in the council chamber. The spirit in the air seems to be that you can be heard if you agree with the powers in the council. I do not agree with all Cr. Lobbo’s views, however, I am prepared to accept that he has lived in more countries than most of us and he is perhaps more informed than several of the councillors who pretend to be interested in 100% of the community, unlike other councillors who never return telephone calls or emails … he always contacts residents later if not available at the time. There was another councillor who was completely silenced althougn also a very experienced caring person residents in his ward were effectively unrepresented.

Off Topic: the quote is misattributed to Voltaire. It was actually written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall, using the pseudonym S G Tallentyre, and can be found in her book “The Friends of Voltaire”. The book makes the claim that ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it’ was Voltaire’s attitude.
BTW it has been years since I was last represented in Council.

Am extremely impressed that Lobo and the Jewish Council are talking.
I just wonder if the Jewish Council is also talking to Cr. Hyams and Lipshutz. I attended the said Council Meeting and was shocked to hear both these Crs. take Lobo’s perfectly reasonable and widely accepted comment of “any group that requests approval for guns makes a target of themselves” into an anti-Semitic tirade. By doing so, Hyams and Lipshutz did more to engender anti-semitism than Lobo.

The use of the word anti-Semitic for anything and everything has lost its real meaning particularly when they get exposed having closed door meeting. Who knows what all has been done under the pretext of LGA and Local law crafted by them? By the way, are lawyers good and sincere to represent residents? Why do lawyers enter local government when they have 6 figure salary? Is this a mystery? Does the world consider them fair minded?
