We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
People are getting carried away with the idea that this project will really go ahead. It was a thought bubble from the Andrews back room designed to grab a headline. It worked and furthermore is still getting some mileage. Good politics, nothing more. This thing could be built for half the cost, in half the time. Solution. Import cheap labour. We all where undies that are made in China why not get them to build underground railway. The new rail networks in China are amazing.
Once again our crazy State Govt. come up with ridiculous ideas, there is no point in developing on or near train stations if you don’t provide adequate parking. The Herald sun 7/10/18 noted that the Bayside council and mayor are planning to introduce a trial bus service at Middle Brighton train station to stop people using nearby street for parking that are not designed to act as rail parking (streets too narrow). The article goes on to say parking at rail stations is a State Govt. issue not council but they are going to try by spending $60k to say “if council can operate this service and its good why cant the State Govt. do it? Even the Public Transport Users Assoc. spokesperson Daniel Bowen said” Station car parks never meet demand so it is good to see Bayside taking the lead on this”. Not much point building rail stations with no parking; at last a council is being proactive unlike Glen Eira.
Prior to the 2014 state election I asked Brian Tee about just how much “value capture” an Andrews Labor government would try to extract if successful. Unsurprisingly they were very coy, but SkyRail epitomizes their approach—no respect for amenity standards, and no accountability even for the inadequate “decision guidelines” that the Planning Scheme specifies. You need to be in a highly marginal seat before a politician cares about amenity.
