At last night’s council meeting, it was revealed that over 600 trees will be removed by LXRA in order to complete the Glen Huntly station development.
With their typical lack of sufficient detail, the LXRA webpages only provide very scant detail. Please see this link: https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/media/publications/glen-huntly-factsheet-vegetation-removal
The promise to plant 2 trees for every one removed would mean that at least 1200 new trees are planted. We won’t hold our breath, and we also have to wonder whether a 3 foot sapling can in any way be equated with what is about to be destroyed. The onus is thus on council and residents to ensure that as many trees as possible are saved.

They’re up there now chopping out the vegetation.
Holy cow 600 trees, add the heat island effect of a few thousand tonnes of brand spanking new concrete to make the project, we sure are going to be heating up around here.
We live close enough to get all the LXRA newsletter updates, nothing on this tree massacre was ever placed in our slot.

They don’t give a stuff about trees anywhere. Once the plans are in they refuse to alter or change anything

The factsheet makes the claim that the overall tree canopy in the area will increase, but also reveals that it doesn’t know yet whether space for 1200 trees exist, other than it doesn’t want the trees near the rail trench. Developers don’t have to comply with permit conditions or their Incorporated Plan unless they are compelled to. GECC has form on waiving compliance. I do wonder what the State Government’s definition of “the area” is–just how far away will the replacement trees be.

The LXRA has learnt to scam the whole consultation process, experience has payed off. The difference between what happened with Skyrail and McKinnon to North Road projects and the current Glen Huntly and Neerim Roads project are incredibly different. For a start absolutely bugger all public consultation has happened. Just a few web seminar where a few very disinterested bored bureaucrats told attendees what’s going to happen. They’re haven’t been interested in ideas feedback or anything all at all.
CE’s councils role is questionable, it’s impossible to see if their advocacy role “for the best possible outcomes” their words, ever took place at all.
If what’s going to happen is the best possible outcome, I would really hate to see the worse. When it comes to council priorities and treatment Glen Huntly residents as John Lennon (put it in a famous song lyrics) “are the ni##ers” of Glen Eira.
