We are committed to facilitating genuine debate within Glen Eira. Your views on planning, environment, open space, CEO and councillor performance matter.
I notice that the claims are now qualified. We’re not getting “maximum protection” anymore but “better” protection. I particularly like the rhetorical question about why one serves on council. For Mr Hyams I would say it is to feed his ego and failed political aspirations as well as do all he can for only one segment of our community – Frogmore being the most recent example.
The claim to 88% satisfaction ratings is hilarious. The table tells me that since the last election all major services in Glen Eira have been perceived as going downhill and fast. I do not want another 4 years of this man. He costs us too much.
Good pick up. “Better” implies that the zones are far from perfect as everyone knows and that “maximum protection” is Hyams figment of the imagination.
All his ties with the jewish community organisation are omitted, it’s like Basil Fawlty “whatever you do, don’t mention the war”
The man’s a pseudo secular candidate, hiding his credentials in his omissions.
Jamie be upfront with who you are people will respect you for that.
4 out of 10 for honesty
5 out of 10 for meaningful commitment
3 out of 10 for meaningful environmental initiatives
3 out of 10 for planning promises
0 out of 10 for “more”
Results from the community satisfaction survey speak for themselves. Under Hyams and the other councillors Glen Eira has sunk to an all time low. Apart from sealed roads it is on average the worst council according to these results in the metropolitan area. No wonder that there was no officer report this year or any major publicity.
I agree with what other people have said. Electing Hyams means going in the same direction – downhill but faster. Planning, traffic, environment, consultation have only got worse and worse and I hold him and Lipshutz largely responsible for the last two especially. When councillors do everything to pave the way for developers at the expense of the community they should never expect to gain residents votes. To stand again is nothing but gall and treating people like morons.
Jamie claims he has achieved “mandatory height limits in all residential zones”, but the claim isn’t true. MUZ is a residential zone, and doesn’t have mandatory height limits. C1Z is a defacto residential zone and has no height limits and no amenity standards. Height limits don’t apply to non-residential development either.
Height limits are just one of many ResCode standards, and Council is notorious for waiving compliance with the other standards. Height would be less of a concern if buildings were set back further from each other. C60 doesn’t comply with ResCode, has an Incorporated Plan that allows balconies to stick out as far as a developer wants, and everywhere is higher than the Incorporated Plan stated, as measured in stories. Jamie championed C60 knowing all this.
I don’t understand why any councillor wants to be a councillor, but state government insists we have to have them. My preference is for councillors who are honest, can and will answer questions, refrain from abusing meeting procedure and their colleagues, do due diligence in analysing officer reports prior to making decisions, and are prepared to articulate their vision for Glen Eira over the medium and long term. Applying these criteria, the current bunch are a disappointment.
Well said as per usual Reprobate. All are a disappointment and have outstayed their welcome. Their claimed “achievements” have very little to do with councillor initiatives and more to do with Newton’s grand vision. Gesac is a case in point that has meant carving up public open space and turning it into a car park. The $25 million loan is another sore point.
My favourite in the Hyams list is the improvement of “roads, drains”. I would have thought that this is the basics of all councils and that Hyams’ involvement is nonexistent. This is the role of councils – take out the rubbish and fix the footpaths.
No, Jamie goes around on the weekends cleaning out the drains and making the roads, he a real live action man hero for Tucker Ward, you don’t have to see it to believe it.

I got the flyer. Endorsed by a past lib mp who was a real estate agent once upon a time. Fits the picture.

When is this bloke going to have his Johnny Farnham moment, grow up and become James Hyams.
Jamie is beginning to sound like some midlife crisis that has taken out a 99 year lease in the space between his ears.
What’s next, Neily Pilling, Myki Lipshutz, Jimbo Magee, Thomboy Soundness
This Hyams guy has big trouble moving on, doesn’t he?

Did Jamie boy put on his flyer ‘working for our community’ – Shouldn’t that read ‘working for my community’.
What’s the non for profit organisation that Jamie boy works for?
September 6, 2016 at 9:20 PM
The MRC is a non profit organization, maybe this is where JH works, I could understand why he would want to declare that up front

Not a shining light. Hard to go further right. Stuffed up council for years and that translates into stuffing up the community.
