When I first moved in to the City of Caulfield. Being a councillor wasn’t remunerated. A lot of council elections were uncontested. As soon as remuneration came into play all elections since have been contested, I cannot recall any that weren’t. This says lot about the primary reasons people stand for the positions . It’s a job, a way of earning money. Self interest and money is a primary governing force for most people, community interest becomes a secondary concern. I think it would be a good idea to put a cap on how many successive terms any person can serve as a councillor. This would get rid of the old lags that have become addicted to the cash and power of being a councillor.
