Whilst Glen Eira basically sits back and does practically nothing, apart from a very belated media release by the CEO, Bayside City Council has been working flat out to ensure that the community knows what the State Gov is planning for their council. They have:
- Held a community forum on December 18th with expert commentators where over 200 residents attended
- Published summaries of what is proposed and its impact on their municipality
In contrast, residents of Glen Eira would be hard pressed to locate any specific information on council’s website, and there certainly has been no information sessions/forums held by our council.

GECC has rarely if ever criticized State Government decisions and policies. Hard to say why, whether they’re influenced by their political ambitions. In the case of council officers, they’ll have an eye on their next promotion, or securing lucrative private employment in the development industry. There are times when GECC has thought the State Government was too soft re development. Council has argued that borrowed light is an acceptable design technique. It supported a tower development that provided zero car parking. It ignored the overshadowing of neighbouring properties by the same tower. It didn’t speak up when State Government removed the visitor parking requirement for half the municipality. It thinks demolition of historic buildings and replacement with a 10-storey tower is appropriate in a Heritage Overlay. It has repeatedly failed to do any of the “future strategic work” it has identified over the last 20 years. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
